There will be another new face behind the wheel of Mike Garvey’s Late Model at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida this Friday night and Mobile Int’l Speedway on Saturday. Garvey is stepping out of the seat once again and this time he’ll be letting 15-year-old Garrett Jones strap in behind the wheel of the Tracy Goodson-owned machine.
“I’m fortunate enough that I’m going to get to drive Mike Garvey’s Pro Late Model in the 20-30 double feature (Pensacola),” Jones said in an interview on the 51 Network with Bob Dillner. “Hopefully it’ll be a fun weekend.”
Jones, from West Palm Beach, Florida, is a two-time winner at Five Flags Speedway behind the wheel of a Pro Late Model. His past success at the famous half-mile oval on Florida’s panhandle is a big part of the reason why he believes he was asked to race this car.
“They wanted me to be in it at Pensacola because they know I’ve run a lot of races there and I’ve run well there,” Jones said. “Mike wants me in it and he feels like we’ve got a good chance to go win.”
It’s been a while since Jones has raced a Pro Late Model. He’s been focusing much of his attention on his Super Late Model program this year. Jones is racing the Southern Super Series full-time. He has scored two top-five finishes, as well as seven top-10 runs in eight races.
He believes that he can see instant success with Garvey as his crew chief on Friday at Pensacola.
“Mike had one of the best Pro Late Models that I’d raced against all year last year,” he said. “I feel that Pensacola was one of my best tracks that I’d ever run with the pro so I’m excited to get back in one and see what I can do with it.”
If the team comes out of Pensacola unscathed, they will travel to Mobile, AL for the second half of a twin bill this weekend on Saturday.
