STOCKTON, CA – 2014 Pacific Challenge Series presented by PenneyLawyers.com champion Mike Beeler scored his first win of the 2015 campaign to close within two points in the title race in Saturday’s 100 lap contest at Stockton 99 Speedway. Beeler’s win at his home track came in the eighth points paying race of the season and makes him the sixth different series winner this year.
Granite Bay’s John Moore weathered a difficult start to his race to finish third and to win the Tri-Holiday championship for the three race series at the quarter-mile oval. Moore maintained the overall PCS points lead as well.
Madera winner Jeremy Doss of Upperlake, CA won the $500 dash for cash to start on the pole over the 20 car starting field. Doss led the opening lap while Beeler fell backwards from the outside pole. Valley Springs’ Tracy Bolin made several charges inside Beeler that ended when Bolin spun off of Beeler’s door in turn four. That lap four caution set up a restart that saw Doss rocket away once again with Jacob Gomes in tow. The caution came out again on lap eight for Eagle, ID’s Travis Milburn spun around in turn four as well.
Moore got into the back of Ross Strmiska on lap ten to bring out the race’s third caution, and send both Strmiska and Moore to the back. Racing action settled down from that point forward with Modesto’s Kyle Gottula emerging from the pack in third behind Doss and Gomes. Ryan Philpott made moves to advance as high as sixth as well.
Gottula ended up being the cause of the next caution, as the red flag came out on lap 29 when his Chevrolet erupted in a fuel line fire. He was uninjured but done for the evening. Reno, NV’s Randy Hedrick used that incident to emerge in the third position in his PCS debut. Ross Strmiska slowed and fell out of the race on lap 32 with mechanical problems.
At the halfway mark of the race, Moore had sprinted his way back to tenth while Doss continued to pace Gomes and Hedrick through lapped traffic. Business picked up on lap 52 when Gomes took Doss three-wide into turn three, with the duo making contact and Doss spinning from the lead. Gomes admitted fault over the radio, and PCS officials ruled to put Doss back into the lead while Gomes would restart from the back. Beeler assumed second for the ensuing restart behind Doss.
Rookie Cole Moore restarted fourth but tagged the wall and slipped back to the seventh position. The most exciting battle of the night might have been Gomes and Bolin battling it out from ninth place. Gomes cleared Bolin as the caution came out for Don Swartz and Philpott coming together on lap 81. Under the caution period, Doss slowed from the lead with a rack and pinion issue and thrust Beeler into the lead position.
Beeler charged away from Hedrick over the final 18 lap green flag run for a .877 second win with John Moore driving all the way to third at the stripe and Gomes advancing to fourth at the finish. Folsom rookie Hunter Corbitt ran fifth ahead of Cole Moore. Myles Anderson finished ninth after starting 17th to win the Hard Charger for the night.
The Pacific Challenge Series will continue its 2015 championship chase with the ninth points race and tenth race overall on Saturday September 26th at Roseville’s All American Speedway. The penultimate race of the championship will also serve as the prelude to October Classic 100 coming up on October 17th and should be a hotly contested race.
