Williamson, New York – Friday night’s Ferris Mowers Race of Champions fueled by Sunoco Apple Country ‘75’ at Spencer Speedway gave race fans plenty to talk about. Mike Leaty of Williamson, N.Y., capitalized on his home track experience and a strong racecar to win for the first time in the season.
Leaty took the lead on a lap 25 restart from Daren Scherer of Binghamton, N.Y., after starting fourth. He then held off a charging Matt Hirschman of Northampton, Pa., and a brush with the outside wall to hold on and visit victory lane.
“We had a good car all night and we found the outside before anyone else,” Leaty explained in victory lane. “We were running a hard pace and I wasn’t backing down and got into the wall but we were able to hold on. I hope it was an exciting race for the fans. I have to thank all of my guys, we’ve been working hard and had a few setbacks earlier this season, but we’ve recovered and things are heading in the right direction. Tonight is a special win for us and we are certainly going to enjoy it.”
Hirschman finished second for the third time this season, right on Leaty’s bumper, with a chance to win the race after Leaty made contact in the closing laps.
Chuck Hossfeld recovered from a pit stop to finish third and took the point lead over by 12 on Patrick Emerling.
Darin Scherer, who started on the pole, finished fourth and Daryl Lewis, Jr., finished rounded out the top-five.
Hossfeld posted his third consecutive fast time in the Timed Hot Lap session to establish the heat race line ups with a time of 18.856 seconds (95.460 mph).
The next event for the Race of Champions is Saturday, June 11 at Lake Erie Speedway in North East, Pennsylvnia.
