(MUNFORD, AL) – Last year’s Montgomery Speedway track champion, Bret Holmes, was faced with adversity in the Spring Explosion 125, but salvaged a good finish Sunday afternoon. The Montgomery Show Me the Money Series opener was postponed from its originally-scheduled date of Saturday, March 12 due to rain, but blue skies paved the way for Holmes to rally from an early incident to a fourth place finish the next day.

Holmes qualified 12th for the 125-lap event and raced in the top 10 early on. On lap 39, while racing for the seventh position, another driver made contact with Holmes’ No. H2 Pro Late Model, causing it to stall on the track. Once re-fired, Holmes was forced to restart from the rear of the field.

That unfortunate incident set forth Holmes’ rally back to the front.

“We didn’t really give up,” said Holmes. “We know we have a good car here (at Montgomery). We knew we had a good car to come through the field, run multiple lines on both ends of the racetrack and make some passes. My spotter and I were just focused throughout the whole race. I kept telling my guys, ‘It’s okay, we can get a good finish out of this still,’ and that’s what it’s about; not giving up even if some unlucky thing like that happens.”

Over the course of the next 85 laps Holmes worked his way back towards the front of the field as he picked off cars one by one. He worked his way into the top 10 and then the top five. As the laps ticked off, Holmes made his way around Justin South and into the fourth position. The top three had put some distance on the rest of the field by that point, but Holmes continued to charge forward until the laps ran out and he crossed under the checkered flag in fourth.

“We had to come back through the field and that really wore out our tires,” said Holmes. “I definitely think we were a top-three car. I don’t know if we would have had anything for Casey (Roderick, second place) or Augie (Grill, race winner), but we were definitely a top-three car today. I just hate it for my guys that work so hard to have this unlucky thing happen, but we just need to get better in qualifying that’s all it amounts to. We’ll go to Opp next weekend just run our Super Late Model and work on some little things we found out from this weekend.”

Next up for Holmes will be the Rattler 250 Sunday, March 20 at South Alabama Speedway in Opp, Alabama. An online broadcast of the race can be seen live on Speed51.com.
