With an additional $25,000 (CAD) on the line this year, a new twist has been added to the second running of the $75,000-to-win Canadian Short Track Nationals at Jukasa Motor Speedway. The richest asphalt Late Model race in North America will feature qualifying heat races and a new pit stop format on Sunday, September 1.
The new format will see drivers once again participate in single-car qualifying; however, only the top 16 qualifiers will lock themselves into the 250-lap main event. The remainder of the field will be split into four 10-lap heat races, with the top-five finishers in each heat race earning a spot in the Canadian Short Track Nationals. A B-Main feature will also qualify a to-be-determined number of drivers to the main event, with the number dependent on the competitors that earned guaranteed starting positions during Jukasa qualifying events.
In addition to the new heat race format, a new format will also be in place for pit stops. During the inaugural Canadian Short Track Nationals there was a halfway break on Lap 125 that allowed teams to change tires, add fuel and make adjustments. This year’s race will still include that five-minute break; however, teams will only be allowed to add fuel and make adjustments during that break.
When it comes to tires, teams will be allotted eight race tires (four on the car and four in the pits) for the 250-lap race. Teams will be allowed to change four tires during the race, but they will only be allowed to change a maximum of two tires per caution. Although caution laps will count towards the 250-lap total, teams will not lose laps if they chose to pit during a caution.
“We wanted to create more excitement for the fans and add some strategy for the teams competing in the Canadian Short Track Nationals. With this new format I feel we have accomplished that,” said Jukasa Motor Speedway General Manager Alex Nagy.
The latest entry list for the 2nd Canadian Short Track Nationals features the names of 60 Pro Late Model drivers from all over North America.
In addition to the Pro Late Model main event on Sunday, September 1, there will also be an Outlaw Super Late Model race on Saturday, August 31.
