Augie Grill returned to a place he knows all too much about Friday night: Five Flags Speedway victory lane. The two-time Snowball Derby winner started on the front row and led all 50 laps to score his 11th career Modifieds of Mayhem win, extending his series record for wins in the process.
While he never gave up the lead during the event, Central Florida standout Cody Stickler did not make it easy in the final laps. Stickler stuck around Grill after the final restart with around 15 to go and remained within a few car lengths of the No. 112 while they checked out from the rest of the field.
“The No.42 (Stickler) gave us a run there at the end, I think he got a little free and that gave us a chance to get away a little bit,” Grill said in victory lane. “I was running pretty hard there after that last restart, about as hard as I could go.”
While Grill has won the last three Modified races during the Snowball Derby, the Modifieds of Mayhem 50-lappers had been dominated by Ohio invader Kyle Purvis since the start of last season. Grill’s win stopped Purvis’s 50-lap Five Flags race winning streak at three.
With Friday night’s win out of the way, Grill feels his Modified program is back at full song.
“They’re a lot of fun, especially when you have a good car like we did tonight. Kyle Purvis had been wearing us down here, we had won at the Snowball but he had us beat. I think tonight we got right back to where we need to be.”
Stickler, Korey Ruble, Bruce Bennett and Purvis rounded out the top-five. The Modifieds of Mayhem return to Pensacola for their season finale and biggest race, the 75-lapper on Friday, December 4 during Snowball Derby weekend.
