2015 SRL Spears Southwest Tour Series champion Jacob Gomes made the cross country trip early to get in some track time with a brand new race car on Monday. The day did not end well at all as the team’s brand new Senneker Performance Super Late Model ended up in the wall in turns three and four.
“It would have been a lot of work to get the rear end back,” Gomes told Speed51.com powered by JEGS after more than a day analyzing the damage. “It got it pretty good. Quarter panels and stuff with not the right body parts and would have wanted to get it a little better. We’re not sure what happened.”
The Manteca, California based driver came to the final Blizzard Series race of the Five Flags Speedway season and broke a rear end there as well, but the team has continued to not look back as they have a backup ride prepared.
“We’ve got it all set up and had it on the pull-down for this race,” Gomes said. “We’re moving forward trying not to think about it anymore and see what happens.”
The car Gomes now has entered for the 49th Annual Snowball Derby has a history at the annual event and more.
“It’s a straight rail Hamke car we came here with two years ago for the Snowball Derby and missed it by one,” Gomes mentioned. “It’s a really good car. We’ve been working on it a lot more over the last two years. It’s got a lot more speed in it and ran in the top five at the Winter Showdown.”
Despite it being the backup for the Derby, it has certainly been a car Gomes is used to and has their confidence high to be in Sunday’s field.
“I’m really comfortable in this car. I know it really well, how to handle it, and how it works so it will be a good one. Just hold our head up; we know we’re going to make the show.”
For his team’s hard work over the last two days attempting to repair the crashed car and prepare the backup car, Gomes was awarded Wednesday’s PitBoxes.com Pit Crew of the Day Award. His team will receive a $100 PitBoxes.com gift certificate for their efforts.
