Georgia Young Gun Dominates Duels in Dixie Finale

Scoring his first win of the 2020 season, Ashton Winger proved untouchable Saturday night at Deep South Speedway (AL) in the $5,000-to-win “Duels in Dixie” finale for the Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series.

Winger secured his lead only a handful of circuits into the 50-lap feature and spent the remainder of his time navigating an oval obstacle course of slower Supers on his way to a six-second victory over Ryan Crane.

Adding to the sweetness, Deep South was a new venue for Winger coming into the doubleheader event.  Though the 20-year-old struggled to find consistent speed earlier in the weekend, it’s safe to say the 3/8-mile clay oval ultimately made a good first impression.

“We struggled a little bit Friday night and we struggled when we tested here Thursday,” Winger told Speed51.  “We’ve been tweaking with this car, it’s new.  It’s been fast at times but we’ve had trouble being really consistent.

“It seems like everything just kind of came together there in the feature.  Early we were able to race three, four-wide.  I think I went from sixth to the lead in three or four laps, it just kind of got locked down there at the end.  Anytime you can start sixth and win, it’s a pretty good place.”

Winger, who is competing full-time in the World of Outlaws Late Model Series and is currently leading in the points standings for Rookie of the Year, didn’t want an off-weekend to go to waste.

“You can never top testing, trying to get better,” Winger said.  “We figured we’d come over here and try to get our new car a little bit better.  Obviously the World of Outlaws is our priority, but I love running with these guys every chance I get; they’ve always been really good to me.  The biggest thing is just making laps and just testing, trying to stay ahead of the game.”

Three Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series wins now to his credit, the game continues for the young Georgian with upcoming races in Tennessee, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
