On this weekend one year ago, Garrett Jones celebrated the biggest win of his racing career after winning his first ever Super Late Model race at Mobile Speedway (AL) with the Southern Super Series presented by Sunoco. Fast forward a year and Jones is returning to Mobile for Saturday’s Lee Fields Memorial hoping for a repeat effort that will minimize the gap at the top of the SSS championship standings.
“We won this race last year and it was our first Super Late Model win. I know we can run good there we just need to get everything dialed in,” Jones said. “We ran there earlier this season and didn’t have that good of a run.”
Jones currently trails SSS points leader Stephen Nasse and Chandler Smith in the points chase. With 31 points between himself and Nasse, Jones knows that it is going to take strong and consistent finishes to put himself in contention for the championship.
“If we can go out and win this race I think that will help to put us back in the chase,” he stated. “Nasse and Chandler have created quite a space between them and everyone else, but if we can win this I think we will be okay.”
In the Southern Super Series race earlier this season at Mobile, Jones finished 10th but has confidence that they will have a better effort the second time around.
“We went with a different setup and it didn’t work out for us, so this time we are going to go with the same setup that we ran last year when we won,” Jones explained. “I am excited to see how it goes though.”
Knowing he can win at Mobile has created higher expectations for the young driver going into the weekend.
“It’s a little bit of pressure but we are looking at this race as a chance to turn our season around and get some momentum going to finish it out.”
With only three races left on the schedule, time is running out for the youngster to make his move towards the front. Fans who can’t make it to Mobile, Alabama this weekend, can catch all the action on the Southern Super Series pay-per-view broadcast on Speed51.com. The broadcast is available for purchase here.
