Tim Fuller kicked off the 2016 Super DIRTcar Series season with a dominant performance Wednesday evening at Volusia Speedway Park (FL). With the victory in the 30-lap main event to kick off the DIRTcar Nationals for the big-block Modifieds, Fuller put the field on notice that he will be a force to be reckoned with moving forward this season.
Fuller sped past front-row starters Tyler Siri and Tyler Dippel in the opening laps and held off Billy Dunn following a series of mid-race restarts for the season-opening victory. Dunn got to the inside door of Fuller at one point, but Fuller used his strength along the outside cushion to sail away with the win.
“He scared me down there in (turns) three and four,” Fuller said of his battle with Dunn. “He got up inside of me once, but I figured that he went back to the top. The top is so dominant here right now. I figured if he was going to get by me on the bottom, he had the dominant car. I got up on the top and everybody wanted the bottom, so I just stayed up on the top and it turned out okay.”
It was the sixth career Florida win for Fuller, a veteran racer from Watertown, New York.
Dunn, who made his Volusia debut in a big-block Modified, turned heads with his runner-up finish.
“It’s just a really good run for our first time here. For a second I thought I might have something for Tim, but as the race went on I just got tight on the cushion and there wasn’t quite enough on the bottom to challenge him on the restart.”
Billy Pauch finished third, while Larry Wight and Matt Sheppard rounded out the top five.
Sheppard and Brett Hearn, who finished eighth, were two of the lone drivers who made the inside groove work Wednesday at Volusia. Their march through the field, as well as the battle for the win and more were caught by the Speed51 Network cameras. Full highlights from Wednesday’s feature will hit Speed51.com Thursday morning.
