There’s something about Friday night’s at Volusia Speedway Park (FL) that brings Rick Laubach to the top of his game.  For the third time in four years, the Pennsylvania driver piloted his No. 7 Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modified to victory lane on Friday night at the DIRTcar Nationals.

“It feels good to win,” Laubach told powered by JEGS.  “For the last three years we’ve won this night down here and I was thinking, ‘Man, maybe we can get one earlier this year’ but it didn’t happen. To get one every year for the last three is big.  It’s a tough field here and I’m proud.”

Laubach’s win comes one night after watching a win slip away late while working lapped traffic.  It was nearly the same story on Friday night as he started closing in on slower cars in the final laps. But this time, Laubach wasn’t going to watch his chance at victory diminish.

“Definitely gratifying, but nerve-wracking,” he said.  “It’s not easy to win these races and last night I was just taking it easy and took it too easy and lost it.  Tonight I didn’t want it to happen, but hell it almost happened again.

“I’m like Deja-vu, I just can’t let this happen again.  I was cautious last night and tonight I kind of forced the issue and moved some people out of the way.  I just didn’t want it to happen again and that’s what it takes to win.”

Sheppard, Alan Johnson, Erick Rudolph and Stewart Friesen completed the top-five.  Sheppard now leads Laubach 176-156 in the overall DIRTcar Nationals Big-Block Modifieds point standings.

With one win to his credit during the 45th DIRTcar Nationals, Laubach can officially say he has enjoyed his family’s annual “race-cation.”

“This is a race-cation but we have our heads into it at night,” he said.  “We came down late last week and we do Disney and go to the Speedway and lay on the beach, swim in the pool and then you come to the track and you’re just not into it yet.  So we’re just not into it yet, but by Friday I think we’re into it.”
