Franklin County CARS Tour Debut Produces Instant Classic

The fans in Callaway, Virginia were treated to a show on Saturday night, as the CARS Tour drivers rolled into town. More than 20 CARS Tour Late Model Stock drivers started the race, but in the end it came down to two drivers trading the top spot and paint during the closing laps.

In a thrilling finish, Jared Fryar outdueled Mike Looney for his second career CARS Late Model Stock Tour victory in the series’ first trip to Franklin County Speedway.

The hometown favorite and NASCAR Weekly Racing Series 2019 Virginia State Champion, Mike Looney, laid down a blistering lap in qualifying, as well as former series CARS Super Late Model champion Jared Fryar. The two drivers actually had identical times in qualifying at a 13.707, but Looney was awarded the pole after officials deemed he had a faster first lap that Fryar.

“I would have rather been on the pole by a tenth or so, but kudos to Jared, he laid down a heck of a lap to have never raced here before,” said Looney after qualifying.

Looney led a good portion of the race in dominating fashion, but in a thrilling finish Jared Fryar edged out Looney by just over a foot to win the inaugural CARS Late Model Stock Car at Franklin County.

“I don’t even think I was breathing those last five laps. I caught him and knew I was just a little better than him,” said Fryar.  “I got into him there, we banged wheels and I about lost it down there in one. I don’t know how I saved that one.”

The two exchanged kind words in victory lane, claiming that that was just hard racing.

“What a race! Second isn’t what we were looking for, but that’s why they call it racing. He drove his tail off and I still confused on how he passed a car as fast as mine,” said Looney.

This was the first CARS Tour-sanctioned race that Looney had competed in, and he is planning more starts already. Looney had the pole for the race and led the most laps in his CARS Tour debut.

“These CARS Tour guys are pros; it did not take them long to catch on and figure out a place they had never been. I couldn’t be mad after losing that one, we were sort of out of our league, but had a little home field advantage to keep up with them tonight,” said Looney.

The next race on the schedule for the CARS Late Model Stock Tour is August 29 at Langley Speedway.
