Former USAC National Sprint Car champion Tony Elliott died in a plane crash Friday near the South Carolina / Georgia border.

 

Elliot and three others, Warsaw (IN) Councilman Charlie Smith, his son Scott and Indiana high school football coach Scott Bibler all perished in the accident.  The group was reportedly flying to attend the Notre Dame football game Saturday at Clemson University.

 

Tony Elliott was a fixture for years on the short tracks of America in the open-wheel wars.  In addition to the 1998 USAC Sprint Car National Championship, Tony won races in all three of USAC’s national series.  According to 51’s TheThirdTurn.com, Elliott is a 27-time winner in USAC national series competition throughout two decades of racing.

 

Recently Elliot curtailed his driving careers to concentrate on his business, Elliott Trailer Sales.  Elliott was 54 years-old.
