With three wins and an ARCA/CRA Super Series championship in the past two years, Josh Brock is poised to become the next breakout veteran of short track racing. His 2020 Super Late Model campaign resumes this weekend with the Rattler 250, his second attempt in the Southern Super Series crown jewel.
It will be just his second Super Late Model start of the year, after running the PRA Tours opener at Southern National Motorsports Park in February. Brock climbed back behind the wheel of a race car just last weekend, competing in a Street Stock on the dirt at Richmond Raceway (KY) to help he and his team get ready for this weekend.
“It was fun to get to stretch the legs and knock the rust off with the team and get back into a rhythm. We did come back in the feature and finish fourth after having some big issues there in practice and qualifying, we were able to fight back,” Brock told Speed51. “Either way, it was good just to have fun and learn a lot for our dirt Street Stock. The main thing was to get ready for the Rattler and get everything back in rhythm.”
Even though the COVID-19 pandemic had put a stop to racing, it was still a busy time for Brock as his business, Stream Restoration Services, was deemed essential. Aside from the lack of racing going on, it was business as usual.
“We really were just living a normal life. We’ve still been working as of right now, it hasn’t affected us as far as the virus and stuff. We work outside in construction and with the equipment we’ve been following those guidelines. We worked for some of the government stuff so we’ve had to keep digging, keep working.”
Brock ventured outside CRA for several races in 2019, with one of those races being the Rattler. He finished fifth in his Rattler debut one year ago, giving he and his team an extra boost of confidence moving forward.
With last year’s top-five run, his team is feeling like they could win the race this Sunday.
“We learned a lot, but I think we learned a lot just last year as far as some things that we do for setup. Last year’s Rattler gave us a lot more confidence in what our team can do. That was really one of our first big showings outside of CRA.
“We ran really good, we should’ve run better than fifth. We had the nose tore up just a little bit on a pit stop that was causing major dragging on the track that was killing us in the corner,” he added. “I don’t think we could’ve run with Harrison (Burton) or Bromante but I think we could’ve been right there with them. They had Fury cars and I have a very similar setup to them, I think we could’ve been there closer to them. We’re coming in here with good confidence, we feel good about everything going on and feel good about our program and our setups.”
Last year’s Rattler run kicked off a strong year for Brock with the ARCA/CRA Super Series. He scored two wins, including the biggest one of his career to date at the North/South Super Late Model Challenge, and finished second in series points, just car lengths behind eventual champion Greg Van Alst.
Last year’s championship near0miss has Brock more motivated than ever to click off wins.
“We had two major wins, the big win at Nashville and I got to duke it out with Johnny VanDoorn for a big win at Baer Field. We ran well all year. When they do the crazy points system, that’s what happens. It’s just a part of the game, win or lose you’re a part of it. We’ll just take that motivation and put some more fuel in the fire and try to do better this year.”
There’s only one goal for Brock and his team this weekend to resume the 2020 Super Late Model season; score a date with the rattlesnake.
“It’s racing against the best of the best and trying to win, it’s always a great accomplishment and I’d love to have that rattlesnake around my head.”
