Track officials at Florida’s New Smyrna Speedway have confirmed with that the 49th Annual Florida Governor’s Cup 200 will be moved to run on a Sunday afternoon on November 23rd.  The entire race weekend will be three days with practice on Friday, November 21st, qualifying and a 50-lap Pro Late Model race on Saturday, November 22nd and the 200-lap Super Late Model Florida Governor’s Cup on Sunday.

“This is our biggest race of the year and it has a lot history,” said track owner Robert Hart.  “It’s a race that’s had a lot of drivers from all around the county and some that some people only get to see once a year.”

In addition to the move from a Saturday night to a Sunday afternoon, the track also informed that the race will be $10,000 to win.  Other purse details are still being worked on at this time.

Hart also said the Governor’s Cup 200 was a day race back when it was at Golden Gate Speedway in Tampa, Florida before the race was moved to New Smyrna in 1988.  Last season the track experimented with the race being run in October, but elected to move it back to November for this year’s race.

“I had seen a picture here at the track of the Governor’s Cup being run on a Sunday afternoon and we got to talking about it,” said Hart.  “The idea came together and we made the call to move the Governor’s Cup to run on Sunday.”

The Governor’s Cup 200 will be the only daytime race on the New Smyrna Speedway schedule in 2014, giving it even more of the late-season short track spotlight.

“Fans like to see the shows in the day,” said track General Manager Kim Brown.  “I think the fact other big races have had success during the day shows that we can be successful.  If we were going to do a show on Sunday then the Governor’s Cup would be the only one for that change.”

Alabama driver Augie Grill has won the Florida Governor’s Cup 200 each of the last two seasons and will look for his third in a row this coming November.

In addition to the changes to the 49th Annual Florida Governor’s Cup 200, track officials have also announced that partner track  Lake City Speedway in nearby Lake City, FL will hold races on November 8th and 9th.

Classes that will be in action include Mini Stock, Super Stocks and E-Modifieds.  Both dates will also daytime events with more information to follow.

Entry forms, purse structure, detailed event schedules and more will be announced by New Smyrna Speedway officials soon.
