Rising to the challenge is what separates a top-notch driver from the rest of the pack. Whether it’s dominating a race, going on a winning streak or sealing a win with a late-race pass, drivers slowly rise to the top of the field and make a name for themselves.
That’s why the FK Rod Ends, who has nearly 10,000 combinations of rod ends and spherical bearings available and carefully crafts their products, is proud to honor a monthly “Team FK Driver of the Month” from the short track ranks of America on Speed51.com. Each month, an esteemed panel of short track industry insiders will vote on which driver had the most success on the track. The driver with the most votes will then be the “Team FK Driver of the Month” and will receive a $25 product certificate to use at FK Rod Ends. At the end of the 2020 season, the driver that received the most votes throughout the season will then be the “Team FK Driver of the Year” and will be awarded a (to be determined) prize from FK Rod Ends. The winner of the “Team FK Driver of the Month” for the month of October is…
Northeast Dirt Modifieds
In the struggle that has been 2020, one class of short track racing that has struggled the most has been the Northeast Dirt Modifieds, due to crippling regulations all year in New York State and Canada. Thankfully, October still had opportunities for the stars of the Dirt Mods to shine; with Mat Williamson rising to the occasion in the month’s second half.
One of Pennsylvania’s dirt track jewels, Port Royal Speedway, plays host to Dirt Modifieds once a year with the Short Track Super Series Speed Showcase. For 2020, the October 17 event was supersized to a 200-lap feature and $53,000-to-win. After a long night, with temperatures dipping towards 30 degrees, Williamson took home the big payday.
But, the St. Catherines, Ontario driver was not done. Just one week later, Williamson was back racing at Orange County Fair Speedway in New York, for the granddaddy of Dirt Modified racing, the Eastern States 200. After capturing the track’s Centennial Race win in 2019, Williamson was able to add another Dirt Mod crown jewel, coming out on top after 200 laps, and securing a further $25,000.
For winning the two biggest Dirt Modified races of 2020 in back-to-back weeks, Mat Williamson has been named the FK Rod Ends Short Track Driver of the Month for October 2020.
Other drivers receiving votes this month were Curtis Gerry, Ty Majeski and Carson Hocevar.
