Things have come a long way for Bobby Measmer Jr. in the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour ranks. Three seasons ago, the driver from Concord, North Carolina was struggling to even crack the top 10. Fast forward to Sunday night and the Late Model-turned-Modified racer was celebrating his first career NWSMT victory at East Carolina Motor Speedway (NC).

“It has not sunk in yet,” Measmer told Speed51.com powered by JEGS. “I am not sure when it will sink in. Perhaps tomorrow after we get home. I called my buddy Bradley McCaskill for some pointers on how to get around this place and that helped a bunch. I have to thank Krispy’s Bar and Grill, Lead 2 Real Estate, Kevin Hughes Motorsports, Racing Electronics and Fanvision. I know I am forgetting someone, man this means a lot.”

PFC ZR94 300x250During the day Measmer had to battle with defending series champions Andy Seuss, Burt Myers and George Brunnhoelzl, III to make his way forward. Good pit strategy and track position left him up front at the end of the day.

“We ran our own pace today,” Measmer said. “I knew we had a decent car, but I didn’t think that we had a winning car. We fell back to eighth there around lap 70 and when the yellow came out we pitted and swapped our left-side tires and got track position on everyone when they came in.”

Measmer Jr. took the lead on lap 130 and held it for the final 21 circuits, holding off all challengers on the final two restarts to seal the first win of his career.

This is not the first win for Measmer in a Modified. Earlier in the year he won a Southern Modified Racing Series event at his home track of Concord Speedway. But for Measmer, Sunday’s win at a track away from home was a bigger accomplishment to put on his resume.

“Everyone said we would run well at Concord and that was cool to win there,” Measmer stated. “That’s my home track and winning there was special because we beat Ryan Preece for the win. However, this is a NASCAR race and that means a lot to me, and this team, my family and my car owner Kevin Hughes.”

There are three races remaining for the 2016 NWSMT season and the victory pushes Measmer to third in the points, just 30 behind Burt Myers for the lead.

“We sat down this year and wanted to finish in the top three in the points, now we have a win and we are heading to South Boston. I love racing there and hopefully we can keep the momentum going.”
