With only five weeks remaining until the 51st Annual Snowball Derby, the mailbox at Five Flags Speedway has been filling up with completed entry forms for the most prestigious Super Late Model race in the country. On Tuesday evening, track officials released the first look at the Super Late Model entry list for drivers competing during the November 28 – December 2 race weekend.
The first look at the entry list for the 300-lap Super Late Model race on Sunday, December 2 includes the names of 44 different drivers from 18 different states and three Canadian provinces.
Out of the 44 drivers currently entered for the race, many of them are champions and/or big race winners.
Casey Roderick, the 2018 Blizzard Series champion at Five Flags Speedway and the likely 2018 Southern Super Series champion, headlines the list of champions who will be chasing the Tom Dawson Trophy.
2018 JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour champion Jack Dossey III and 2018 Pro Stock Tour champion Cole Butcher have filed entries for the event. Other championship contenders including Derek Thorn (NASCAR K&N Pro Series West) and Raphael Lessard (CARS Tour) have also entered the event.
Oxford 250 winner Bubba Pollard, SpeedFest winner Chandler Smith, Summer Showdown winner Preston Peltier, Rattler 250 winner Harrison Burton, Winchester 400 winner Jeff Choquette and Dixieland 250 winner Chase Purdy are all entered and will be looking to add another big win to their list of accomplishments in 2018.
A strong contingent of drivers who have competed or are currently competing in NASCAR’s national touring series have filed entries for the event.
Timothy Peters, an 11-time NASCAR Camping World Truck Series winner and a former winner of the prestigious Martinsville 300 Late Model race, is set to make his Snowball Derby debut.
Peters will be joined by NCWTS championship contenders Noah Gragson and Grant Enfinger, who will both be chasing their first Snowball Derby victory.
Stewart Friesen, a Dirt Modified ace turned NCWTS driver, has entered the Snowball Derby after making a handful of Super Late Model starts this season. Friesen is a five-time winner of the prestigious Super DIRT Week Big-Block Modified race and is fresh off a big $40,000 victory in the Eastern States 200 at Orange County Fair Speedway (NY).
David Gilliland – a driver who has spent time competing in the NASCAR Cup Series, NASCAR XFINITY Series and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series during his career – has filed an entry and will be making his Snowball Derby debut.
Although this is just the first look at the Snowball Derby entry list and more drivers are expected to enter in the coming weeks, only one former race winner is currently entered for the race. That distinction goes to 2004 Snowball Derby winner Steve Wallace, who will be looking to score his second win in the race after a few years away.
Six drivers from the state of Florida will be looking to keep the Tom Dawson Trophy in the Sunshine State for the first time since Johanna Long’s (now Robbins) victory in 2010. Those drivers include the aforementioned Choquette, as well as David Rogers, Jesse Dutilly, Stephen Nasse, Kyle Bryant and Garrett Jones.
Connor Okrzesik and Dustin Smith represent the state of Alabama on this year’s entry list. They will be looking to become the first drivers from the “Heart of Dixie” to win the race since Augie Grill in 2008.
One state that hasn’t lacked Snowball Derby success in recent years is the Peach State of Georgia. The state will once again be well represented in 2018 with Kyle Plott, Kason Plott, Spencer Davis and Corey Heim joining the likes of Pollard, Roderick and Chandler Smith.
The Lone Star State of Texas will be represented by Chris Davidson, Kaden Honeycutt, Joe Aramendia and Casey Smith, while the Commonwealth of Virginia will see Mason Diaz and Timothy Peters head south to Pensacola.
Donnie Wilson, the 2016 Southern Super Series champion, will represent the state of Oklahoma as he looks to end his streak of bad luck at Five Flags Speedway.
A strong contingent of drivers from the Midwest region – including the states of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin – will be present for the 51st Annual Snowball Derby.
Four-time ARCA Midwest Tour champion Ty Majeski leads the charge from the Midwest, and he’ll be joined by the likes of Austin Nason, Boris Jurkovic, Carson Hocevar, Dennis Prunty, Derek Kraus, Jack Dossey III and John DeAngelis.
The West Coast will once again be represented well at this year’s Snowball Derby with Derek Thorn and “Northwest Racing Legend” Garrett Evans joining last year’s polesitter Preston Peltier on the entry list.
Currently, New Hampshire driver Derek Griffith is the lone driver entered from the New England region. Griffith, a member of the Kulwicki Driver Development Program, will be looking to make his Snowball Derby debut in a brand-new race car.
As previously mentioned, a trio of Canadian provinces will also be represented with Cole Butcher (Nova Scotia), Jerry Artuso (Ontario) and Raphael Lessard (Quebec) entered.
The full entry list for both the 51st Annual Snowball Derby can be seen below. Entry lists for other divisions competing during the race weekend will be released soon.
Racing will begin on Wednesday, November 28 as the Pure Stock division will compete for 50 laps around Five Flags Speedway. Wednesday’s program also includes rig parking for Late Model teams, the Green Flag Pit Party following the Pure Stock race, and the qualifying draw for both the Snowflake 100 and the Snowball Derby.
Late Model teams will take to the track for the first time on Thursday, November 29 in their first rounds of practice. Thursday night’s racing program features 50-lap events for the Sportsmen and Outlaw Stock competitors.
The Friday of Snowball Derby weekend is often called the most intense day in short track racing, as Super Late Model drivers compete in qualifying in hopes of securing their spot in Sunday’s field. The Modifieds will also be in action on Friday night in a 75-lap feature.
Saturday, December 1 is jam-packed with racing action. With qualifying for the Pro Late Model Snowflake 100, last chance races for both the Snowflake 100 and Snowball Derby, the Snowflake 100 itself and a 50-lap Pro Truck feature, there is no shortage of excitement for fans at the track.
Finally, the biggest day of the year comes on Sunday, December 2, the day of the 51st Annual Snowball Derby. Pre-race festivities begin at Noon CT, with the class photo at 12:30 p.m. and driver introductions beginning at 1:15 p.m. The green flag will drop on the 51st Annual Snowball Derby at 2:00 p.m.
