The fans have spoken and the final guaranteed starting position for the Sunoco Race of Champions 250 at Oswego Speedway has been decided. Fan-favorite “Andy J” received the most votes in the last two days, and as a result, Andy Jankowiak is now locked into the September 17th race.
Jankowiak is the sixth and final driver to be locked in. He now joins Ryan Preece (Turkey Derby), Justin Bonsignore (North-South Shootout), Eric Goodale (Richie Evans Memorial at New Smyrna), Matt Hirschman (Star SBM 125), and Austin Kochenash (Bob “Heavy” Scherer Memorial) as drivers guaranteed a starting position in the 66th Annual Race of Champions 250.
“The list of drivers was full of guys that are certainly quite reputable,” said Joe Skotnicki, owner of the Race of Champions tour. “A lot of people like Andy. He’s a throwback. Knowing his dad and knowing Andy, he’s a lot like his dad. His dad had a big following a lot like Andy is developing. Obviously this is evidence of that. We gave the fans an opportunity and this is who they chose. For that many votes over a short period of time, that’s pretty outstanding.”
Voting lasted for 48 hours through Speed51.com powered by JEGS, and saw Jankowiak receive a staggering amount of votes. Jankowiak received more than half of the total votes, and had close to 100 more votes than his next closest competitor.
Jankowiak has started the Sunoco Race of Champions three times so far in his career with a best finish of fourth coming last year at New York’s Chemung Speedrome. His best finish in the Race of Champions at Oswego was 18th in 2013.
The late Tony Jankowiak, Andy’s father, made multiple Race of Champions starts at Pocono Raceway. His best finish came in 1985 when he finished seventh.
The 66th Annual Sunoco Race of Champions weekend kicks off on Thursday, September 15. The race will take place on Saturday, September 17. For more information on the Sunoco Race of Champions, head to www.rocmodifiedseries.com. For more information on Oswego Speedway, head to www.oswegospeedway.com.
