Fergy Time Gets the Win He Needed at Cherokee

The ULTIMATE Super Late Model Series returned to action Saturday night at Cherokee Speedway with a familiar face in victory lane.  Inaugural series champion Chris Ferguson took the lead from Brett Hamm on lap 12 and led the rest of the way in the Big Chief 40, scoring a much-needed win for he and his team.

After struggling at Golden Isles Speedway with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series last weekend, he learned earlier in the week that he had lost a family member.  Racing provided a bit of a healing touch on Saturday night with a trip to victory lane at “The Place Your Momma Warned You About.”

“I just got to say God is great.  My step-mom lost her mom last week.  [God] provides and I got to tell you, he provided tonight,” Ferguson said on the Speed51 broadcast.  “He gave us a lot of joy.  I did not look good at Golden Isles last week and it’s just amazing how it works.  We needed this win and we got it.”

Contrary to recent events at the 3/8-mile clay oval, the high side was on full display Saturday night throughout the 40-lap event.  Ferguson made his race-winning move on the outside, going around Hamm in the early stages of the event.

A phone call from track promoter Scott Childress earlier in the week ensured a high line for Saturday night’s event, and it was shown front and center throughout the feature.

“I knew there was going to be a little bit, I’ve got to thank Scott for that.  The last couple races here have been around the bottom, he called me this week and told me he put on an extra load.  He said when you think it’s too wet I’ll put on an extra load.  That gave us just enough to get by Brett there on the outside.”

Michael Brown, Kyle Hardy, Anthony Sanders and Brett Hamm rounded out the top five.  Hamm was the fastest qualifier of the evening and Trent Ivey and Joey Moriarty took last chance heat race wins.
