FASTRAK World Challenge Winner Thriving in Unique Season

At the onset of the 2020 racing season, no one would have predicted Matt Long to win the FASTRAK Racing Series championship – including Matt Long.

However, Long is in position to do just that.  He currently leads the FASTRAK Racing Series points standings.  He added to the great year with a non-points win in the FASTRAK World Challenge Saturday at Toccoa Raceway.

The $5,000 win was a long time coming for Long, who has consistently been a top runner with the FASTRAK Racing Series without a win to back it up.

“We’ve only had one or two bad runs,” said Long on Speed51’s “The Bullring” Monday.  “We had been on a streak of seconds and thirds for six or seven races in a row, so it was good to move up a spot or two and get the win.  You don’t want to cry too much about seconds and thirds, but you’ve got to be in position to win those events, and Saturday night we were.”

As the Vice President of Corporate Sales at Charlotte Motor Speedway, there are some weekends when Long simply can’t race.  This had always prevented Long from competing for championships until an unorthodox 2020 season rolled around.

Currently, Long leads the FASTRAK Racing Series points chase by one marker over Layton Sullivan.

“On a normal season, I can’t run for a points championship.  There are certain weekends, I can’t race, no matter what.  This COVID year has been better for me, but that’s not something good for anybody else.  The schedule has worked out so we could hit them all, and that’s been the difference.

“We really haven’t raced as much as other years.  A lot of the local tracks can’t run, so our focus has been on these bigger races and things have worked out.”

It’s uncertain where the FASTRAK points battle will take him next, as the series works to finalize its season schedule in a challenging year.  However, Long is grateful the series is working to replace events lost earlier in the year and flexible in making preparations.

“For the most part, you have to be fluid because things can change the week of a race.  We were supposed to be at Friendship for this race originally, and it was a last-minute switch to Toccoa.  I haven’t even published a schedule for this season.  Only me and the guys go over the next couple of weeks, with people’s work and what we think we can do.  You just have to be flexible.”

“I’m glad they’re trying to replace them.  I’m pretty flexible, and most guys are in FASTRAK.  I applaud D.J., Stan and those guys for trying to get those races.  Adding a couple of races, everybody is for it.  I think it’s great.”
