After capturing victory two weeks ago in the season opener at Langley Speedway (VA), Greg Edwards sat on pole for the first of two twin 66-lap races in the second night of competition at the Hampton, Virginia race track.


Edwards dominated, leading all 66 laps en route to his second win of the season, Edwards stretched his lead out before lapped traffic allowed 2016 Dominion Raceway (VA) LMSC Champion Nick Smith to pull the lead back, despite this, Smith was never able to catch Edwards. Behind Smith was Justin T Carroll, Connor Hall and Danny Edwards Jr.


Edwards, the 2015 LMSC Champion at Langley was happy with his car but tweaked on it for the second race. Edwards told powered by JEGS “This car keeps winning, the car was a little free so we need to tighten it up for the second race.”


Due to a NASCAR Whelen All-American Series rule, all twin races must include an invert of eight for the second race which sent Greg Edwards back to eighth for the start of the second twin race.


First race winner Greg Edwards was slightly worried about the invert, saying “The invert Is going to affect us pretty bad, I think some guys held back but I would rather get a win in the first race instead of trying to drop back, I just hope we finish the second one. It’s going to be hard to pass.”


Once the second race started with Brenden Queen and Matt Waltz sharing the front row due to the invert, Queen led three laps before Waltz made his way around, using the outside line to get a jump coming out of turn two. From there, Waltz never looked back despite restarts and attempts to cut his lead by Connor Hall and Mark Wertz.


A late race restart gave the field a chance to put a move on Waltz but none of them could hang and in just two laps, Waltz had stretched his lead to four car-lengths over Mark Wertz.


Waltz, who did not race LMSC in 2016, despite working as a crew chief for Macy Causey and running a handful of Xfinity Series races was jubilant in Victory Lane.


“We had a really good car, got out front and just held it, our car was a little loose and that allowed us to run the high line.” Waltz said. “The invert really helped us, we knew the situation we were in during the first race, our car wasn’t that great but we got it to where we needed it.”


First race winner Greg Edwards finished fourth in the second race. After the race, he had mixed emotions.


“When you know what number the invert is, you can sandbag like a couple people did and save tires but the invert defiantly hurt us in the second race, we were a solid second in the first race until the final restart, I took the bottom lane when I should have taken the top and the rubber just wasn’t there.”


Connor Hall finished fourth in the first race, and followed that up with a third-place finish in the second race, something he was pleased with.


“My guys worked really hard on the car, the tire game kind of messed us up in the first race we got really loose and had to give up some spots. The crew made some good adjustments but I’m happy and we will work on the car for next week and come out and try to win.


Mark Wertz was pleased with his second race, after what he called a “terrible car” in the first race, Wertz came home second in the final twin race after an 11th place result in the first.


“The car in the second race was a lot better, we put the car back like it was for the opener and made a few small adjustments to the car but it took about 20 laps to come in but once it did it went to the front and we have a second-place finish and a car in one piece.”


Justin T Carroll came all the way from Caraway Speedway (NC) where he was the spotter for R.D. Smith’s Late Model on Friday night, leading Smith to a victory. Carroll came to Langley and capped his weekend with a pair of top-five finishes in the dual races, finishing third and fifth, respectively.


Carroll was pleased with his night but wants more from his as he expressed to powered by JEGS “We can get it better; our car wasn’t quiet there but we got a third and a fifth with a lot of good notes for next time and a good baseline to go use for our next time out here.”
