Christian Eckes scored his fifth top five of the CARS Late Model Stock Tour season on Saturday afternoon at North Carolina’s Southern National Motorsports Park. Eckes tied his best finish of third for the third time this season.
After starting fourth, Eckes went into tire conservation mode and began to drop back. At one point Eckes was as low as 12th and in danger of going a lap down before a caution with about 30 laps to go gave him a chance to show how much tire he had left.
“We restarted eighth thanks to that late-race caution,” Eckes said. “A lot changed, so I was happy to see that.”
Eckes quickly charged forward after the restart and at one point appeared as though he might have been able to challenge his JR Motorsports teammate Josh Berry for the win.
While Eckes feels that he may have saved too much, he said this was a much better result than the last time he went to Southern National when he finished 12th.
“The last time we went to Southern National we pushed really hard and I actually went a lap down because I just burned my stuff up. This time we tried to save a lot.”
Eckes will be back in the JR Motorsports No. 1 Late Model Stock this weekend at South Carolina’s Myrtle Beach Speedway as he continues to seek that first win.
“I hope it comes this weekend at Myrtle Beach. I thought we had a race winning car and we saved too much. You need to save a lot at Myrtle Beach too, so hopefully I have it figured out now and we can go win.”
