The show went on with Wednesday evening’s Green Flag Pit Party at Five Flags Speedway, which concluded with the Qualifying Draw Down for the 49th Annual Snowball Derby and Snowflake 100.

Severe thunderstorms passed through the panhandle in the afternoon, delaying the technical inspection process.  The cut-off for tech for the day was extended to 8 p.m. CT and from there the qualifying draw began.

Each driver made their way to the stage during the Qualifying Draw Down and picked a can which had a number representing their qualifying spot on the bottom of it.

Over the years, there has been a mix of where Friday evening’s Snowball Derby pole winners have drawn, a few coming from the middle of the order and some, such as 2015’s fast qualifier Ty Majeski, going out late.

This year the Seymour, Wisconsin driver drew in the middle of the pack.  Majeski pointed out that when a driver goes out may or may not play a factor depending on weather conditions.

“Historically, with the way the humidity is usually the first 10 or 15 cars are pretty fast, the track slows down a little, and then picks up again at the end,” Majeski told Speed51.com powered by JEGS.  “If there’s humidity it could come into play, but obviously if it’s a drier night then it won’t matter.  We’ll see what happens and focus on getting the best race car we can for qualifying.”

Grant Enfinger won the pole in 2008, and could have shot later on in the qualifying session, after drawing near the Pepsi can with No. 52 on the bottom of it.  While beneficial for some, the Fairhope, Alabama NASCAR Camping World Truck Series winner knows that performance will come down to preparation.

“We still have to continue working on it either way,” Enfinger said.  “We didn’t want to draw a really early number, but sometimes later on into the night the dew comes in as well.  We’ll take it.”

Some drivers will have to sweat it out throughout the drama-filled qualifying session after picking a smaller number in the order.  Kaz Grala got the honor of drawing number one.  The second-year Snowball Derby entrant remains optimistic.

“It doesn’t matter honestly,” Grala, a 10th place qualifier a year ago, commented.  “I’m just happy I hopefully won’t have to worry about the dew.  I think we’ll be okay either way and just cross our fingers.

“I think it’s going to come down to who has the best car in qualifying.”

Anthony Cataldi elected to let Miss Snowball Derby Raven Hammac pick his Pepsi can, and ultimately ended up with the number-one spot for Snowflake 100 qualifying on Saturday.

Thursday, December 1 will see the Super Late Models take to the track for the first official Snowball Derby practice. The night will be highlighted by a 30-lap race for the Butler U-Pull-It Bombers and a 50-lap event for the Dock on the Beach Sportsmen division.

The top Snowball Derby starting spots will be set on Friday, December 2 during NASH FM 102.7 Pole Night. The Faith Chapel Super Stocks and the Modifieds will each run 50-lap features.

The Pro Late Models take center stage on Saturday, December 3 for the Allen Turner Hyundai Snowflake 100. The 50-lap Last Chance Qualifier for the Snowball Derby and a 50-lap feature for the Beef O’Brady’s Pro Truck division will also run on Saturday night.

Then on Sunday, December 4 the green flag will fly over the 49th Annual Snowball Derby. The 300-lap race will begin at 2 p.m. CT.
