MADERA, CALIFORNIA — Upperlake, CA’s Jeremy Doss, 18, fended off Manteca’s Jacob Gomes in a seven lap shootout to win the inaugural Pacific Challenge Series Super Late Model event at Madera Speedway on Saturday. The race served as the seventh points race and eighth race overall and was a 75 lap contest on the one-third mile asphalt oval.

Doss’ win is his third in 2015 and he remains as the only repeat winner this year. Doss also set the Sunoco Race Fuels fast time with a 14.210 second lap for the new series standard at the venue.

The cat and mouse game with Doss and second fastest qualifier Jacob Gomes began after the eight lap American Racer Tires dash, where 2014 champion Mike Beeler took the victory worth a new set of tires. Beeler’s win also slotted him on the pole, while Doss would have to start fifth and Gomes lined up eighth for the feature.

Beeler led the 24 car field to green and led the opening lap by a nose over two-time track champion Justin Westmoreland of Fresno. Action slowed early on lap one when Justin Philpott suffered left side damage and tagged the turn four wall as well.

The restart saw Beeler pull away while a six car pack put on two-by-two racing for the second position. Westmoreland hung tough using the outside line to maintain second for several laps. Loomis’ Chris Scribner used the outside to sweep past recent St. Mary’s College graduate Travis Milburn to take third. Scribner then turned his attention to Westmoreland.

The outside line proved to be the primary passing lane early with Doss and Gomes both spending a lot of time up high. Scribner cleared Westmoreland for second and brought much of the lead pack with him, shuffling Westmoreland back to seventh. Incoming points leader John Moore got past Westmoreland a few laps later as well.

Doss and Gomes used lap traffic to go high and low to work past Bobby Hodges to take third and fourth respectively. The duo began to close down on Scribner before a big crash on lap 22 brought out a red flag. Kyle Gottula lost an engine and JR Courage spun in the oil to make heavy contact with the wall. Courage was uninjured but done for the evening.

Rookie Hunter Corbitt spun in turn three on the ensuing restart to draw the third caution of the race. That restart saw Scribner go to the outside of Mike Beeler to charge into the lead on lap 25, with Doss taking over second position as well. Beeler, Gomes, and Hodges staged a very spirited battle for third with some contact. Hodges slowed on lap 30 with a right front flat for the fourth caution of the race.

Scribner picked the outside with Doss inside and after a four lap side-by-side duel, Doss edged forward to take over the race. Gomes dove to the inside to move past Scribner with Beeler following suit as well. Mike Hite spun on lap 45 for another caution and under that yellow John Moore was forced to the pits to replace a flat tire. Corbitt also pitted with mechanical problems that ended his night.

Tracy’s Jeff Bischofberger used the lap 45 restart to emerge into fifth place briefly before a spin in turn two. Bischofberger was able to keep going and the race stayed green, but he fell to the rear of the field.

Gomes challenged Doss on several occasions with Scribner trying to fight off Beeler and Milburn. Scribner’s top-five run ended on lap 62 when he stalled with an apparent mechanical problem but was able to eventually continue.

A final caution on lap 67 for Ron Chunn spinning with contact from Bryce Napier set up a thrilling conclusion for the hearty Madera Speedway faithful. Doss picked the outside of Gomes and used that to his advantage to fend off Gomes in a great duel to the finish. Beeler pulled away from Milburn for the third spot as well. Cole Moore quietly charged from 19th to finish fifth ahead of John Nesmith, John Moore, Austin Gant, Bischofberger, and Ryan Philpott to round out the top-ten. 13 cars finished on the lead lap.

The Pacific Challenge Series will next be in action on September 5th at Stockton 99 Speedway for the final round of the three race Tri-Holiday Series. 100 laps of action are scheduled as the chance to the championship continues.
