The Summer Showdown at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, Washington is a race that truly lives up to its name. With $25,000 on the line, drivers from throughout the West Coast will face off Saturday night in a showdown for a big check and a trophy.
While the stars of Washington State usually prove to dominate the list of pre-race favorites, there are plenty of challengers making the trek north, including a handful from California. This list includes current SPEARS SRL Southwest Tour Series points leader Jeremy Doss.
This weekend’s race will be Doss’ first time on Evergreen’s large 5/8-mile track since making his only Summer Showdown appearance in 2015, but he is much more excited than apprehensive.
“I’m really looking forward to it,” Doss told Speed51.com. “We haven’t been there for about three years, so it should be fun.”
“We got in a struggle all weekend with the car and we got it better for the race,” Doss explained. “But two laps into the race we got taken out and that was the end of our night. We don’t have very many laps there, so I’m looking forward to getting a second chance there.”
Doss is also excited to take on what is a challenging but historically significant track for all who live west of the Rocky Mountains.
“It’s a neat old race track with a lot of history,” he said. “It’s worn out so you really have to drive it, and it makes for some really good racing.”
Of course, Doss is most pumped up for the Summer Showdown’s main attraction: his competition; many of whom he only races against two or three other times during the year.
“That’s one of the best parts about going up there for this race. It’s really fun being able to compete against the best of the best like Preston Peltier, the Riddle brothers, Garrett Archer, guys like that. They are great to race with.”
Heading to Evergreen, Doss has some momentum on his side from the SRL season thus far. After four races, he leads the championship standings with two wins at Madera Speedway (CA) and The Bullring at Las Vegas (NV). He also recorded a third-place finish earlier this month at Irwindale Speedway (CA), but a bad outing in April at Kern County Raceway (CA) has kept the points tight.
Doss is hoping that a Summer Showdown win and the $25,000 check that comes along with it will give his No. 75 team an extra boost when the SRL season resumes in July.
“We’ve had some ups and downs. We got a couple of wins, but we also got a DNF in there. Thankful that we’re leading the points. Hopefully we can avoid mistakes the rest of the year and stay up in front and finally get the championship.”
In the end, Doss feels he has what he needs to bring the glory and $25,000 check back home to the Golden State this weekend.
“Senneker Performance and Earnest Performance have really stepped up to give us a good car. We actually raced the 3/8-mile oval at Evergreen in the spring. I know it’s different and a new surface, but hopefully we can transfer our good run over to the 5/8-mile track.”
Speed51.com will have live Trackside Now coverage of the Summer Showdown beginning on Friday for those unable to attend this year’s event.
