Dohm Scores Elusive Butterball Memorial Victory

Going into this weekend’s Butterball Memorial, Zack Dohm had won every major race held at Richmond Raceway except for the track’s crown jewel.  That includes wins with ULTIMATE, Southern Nationals and the Southern All Stars, and races such as the Butch Shay Memorial, Damn Yankees 50 and the return of the Bluegrass Nationals last season.

The West Virginia driver finally picked off the Butterball in dominating fashion Saturday night, leading all 59 laps and bagging the $20,059 that came with the victory.  Aside from brief stints in lapped traffic, Dohm went virtually unchallenged the entire feature.

I can’t believe we finally won this race.  I don’t know how many times I ran top-five, top-three, it seems like ten times, something always happens and we run second or third,” Dohm said on the Speed51.TV broadcast.  “Tonight was perfect.

Heavy rain throughout the week put the Butterball Memorial in jeopardy, but ULTIMATE Heart of America Super Late Model Series and Richmond Raceway officials were able to get the track ready for the event.  After winning his heat race Friday night and starting third, Dohm was leading by the end of the opening lap.

“The way the track was here yesterday after the rain I thought, man, we’re never going to win one of these things.  We qualified good, won my heat and got a good starting spot and I think we led every lap.”

Scott James made moves late in the race to finish runner-up just ahead of Josh Rice.  The result gives him eight top-five finishes at Richmond in 15 starts, but he has yet to win at the facility.

“It was good but just not good enough to beat Zack again.  It was good, fun racing out there but Zack’s got these bullrings figured out and it’s like the sixth or seventh time I’ve finished second to him,” said James.  “We keep running good, being sandwiched between these two guys means we have a pretty good hot rod.”

Rice, Ross Bailes and Justin Ratliff rounded out the top-five.
