Dohm Comes to Life For Another Richmond Triumph

Zack Dohm struggled throughout the evening at Richmond Raceway.  Then, the 50-lap feature came and his No. 17 came to life.

The West Virginia driver drove from the seventh starting spot and quickly worked his way to second on a rubbered-up racetrack.  He then ran down leader Justin Ratliff in lapped traffic, using a slower car to get around him with fifteen laps to go to open the 2021 ULTIMATE Heart of America Super Late Model Series season.

We were awful earlier today.  We do the same stuff to our car everywhere we go.  If it gets slick we do the same thing every time, no matter if it’s a half-mile or a quarter-mile,” Dohm told Speed51.  “We were already there for the heat and we ran terrible.  We had to fix the nose and everything so we put fresh rubber on it and left it how was in the heat, get the nose out of the ground a little bit.

When the feature got going, Dohm showed why he has become the driver to beat at Richmond in recent years.

“I don’t know what to say, we picked them off one by one.  A lapped car helped me get Ratliff for the lead there.  It worked out good for us, I’m sure he’s pissed.  He had a good run, I helped him get out a little bit last year and gave him a few pointers to get his Longhorn going, so I’m glad he’s running good.  He probably could’ve beat me if the lapped car wasn’t there, you just never know.”

Dohm is now batting .500 in touring series starts at Richmond, having won eight races in 16 attempts.  Those wins have come with ULTIMATE, Southern All Stars, FASTRAK, Southern Nationals and most recently in last year’s ULTIMATE Heart of America finale at the Bluegrass Nationals.

Dohm is now a five-time winner in ULTIMATE-sanctioned competition at Richmond Raceway.

After another win at the 3/8-mile, even Dohm can’t pinpoint where the success has come from.

“I don’t know, I’d never came here until 2016 and I’ve been coming every chance since then.  It’s only two hours away, I don’t know but I love it.”

Ratliff held on to finish second, while Josh Rice, Dustin Linville and defending Richmond track champion Derek Fisher rounded out the top-five.
