Defending Blewett Memorial Winner Back on Front Row

One year ago, Anthony Nocella won the John Blewett III Memorial at New Smyrna Speedway in a photo finish over Matt Hirschman.  Nocella will start this year’s running of the 76-lap feature where he finished last year’s race; the front of the field.

Nocella circled the Florida half-mile in 17.350 seconds to set fast time in the session.  That, along with drawing a two-car invert, places Nocella on the front row for Wednesday night’s Tour-type Modified feature.

The beneficiary of the two-car invert, Patrick Emerling, qualified second with a time of 17.369 seconds.  Tyler Rypkema will start third, followed by Eric Goodale and Jon McKennedy.

Hirschman leads Craig Lutz by two points in the Tour-type Modified points for the World Series through two races for the division.  Coincidentally, those two drivers will start 11th and 12th, respectively, to compose the sixth row for the John Blewett III Memorial.

Derek Griffith, the points leader in Super Late Model competition entering Wednesday, set fast time with a lap of 17.759 seconds.  Griffith drew a two for the invert, staying on the front row.  His closest title contender, Jacob Goede, qualified second and will lead the field to green for the 35-lap feature.
