Damn Yankees 50 Champion Hoping to Turn Luck Around

This year has been a challenging one for Kentucky racer Todd Coffman.  He hopes to turn things around with a strong showing this weekend in the Damn Yankees 50 at Richmond Raceway (KY), a race he won last year.

Coffman enters Saturday’s FASTRAK Racing Series Damn Yankees 50 as the event’s defending champion, holding off inaugural race winner Zack Dohm for the victory in 2019.  He has raced at Richmond and other venues surrounding Kentucky in 2020, but has struggled to match last year’s performance.

“I’ve been there a few times this year,” Coffman told Speed51.  “To be honest, we’ve had no luck this year.  It’s been horrible.  I’m hoping to change that around this weekend.

“Last weekend, we went out and had a rear end break.  Friday night, we raced and had a carburetor issue.  We’ve been chasing our car all year.”

While the misfortunes can be discouraging, Coffman and his team have stayed hard at work.  They hope a strong showing this weekend will turn the season around entering the fall months.

“We just keep working.  Hopefully we’ll come out and change everything up this weekend.”

While Coffman has enjoyed plenty of success racing locally, last year’s Damn Yankees 50 was one of the first he’s enjoyed against a touring series such as FASTRAK.  That added another level of excitement for the win.

“I haven’t won a lot of national touring series wins.  I’ve got a bunch of wins locally, around here in Kentucky.  It was pretty big for my team.”

The FASTRAK Racing Series stars will once again be a part of this year’s Damn Yankees 50.  Coffman enjoys racing against the traveling competitors, even though he knows they bring another challenge to the table.

“You know they’ve got their stuff together and race every weekend for the most part.  We’ve got our stuff together, too.  I’m not as fortunate and don’t get to travel as much as those guys.  I’d love to, but we can’t.

“I love racing with those guys.  You can race door-to-door with them, they’re pretty clean racers.”
