Crews Holds On to Win Patriot Shootout Opening Night

Brent Crews tried his best to run away with opening night of the HMS Motorsport Patriot Shootout presented by Osmond.  However, a resilient field of racers as well as lapped traffic during the 40-lap event gave the young gun plenty of excitement.

At the checkered flag, Crews held off California’s Jade Avedisian by 0.223 seconds to take the $1,000 win to kick off the two-night event at Millbridge Speedway.

With 18 Micro Sprints packed onto the 1/6-mile at Millbridge, lapped traffic was a factor early and often for Crews, Avedisian and other drivers who took turns battling up front such as Nick Drake, Gavan Boschele and Buddy Kofoid.  However, Crews successfully navigated the traffic to maintain the lead for every lap of the race.

“The lapped cars were really nice,” said Crews in victory lane.  “The lapped cars weren’t racing me too hard and they were giving me a lot of space.  I was happy about that.

“I just send it as fast as I can around the track.  When I get to the lapped cars, I still send it as fast as I can, but I’ve just got to be conservative and make sure I don’t crash my stuff.”

During the closing laps, Crews admitted to trying to steal a peek behind him to see how close the competition was.  While he couldn’t spot second-place Avedisian, he saw enough to know she couldn’t be far behind.

I tried to look back a little bit in four and I saw [Nick] Drake.  I knew, man, Jade’s gotta be close, so I just kept driving. – Brent Crews

Crews was very happy with his car, giving him plenty of confidence going into night two of racing on Wednesday when another $1,000 will be on the line.

“The car is amazing.  It’s cool to beat all these fast cars and get that money.”
