CRA Late Model Sportsman, Street Stocks Kick Off Season

The Champion Racing Association (CRA) points season kicked off Saturday night with the CRA Late Model Sportsman and Street Stocks at Anderson Speedway.  Both series took to the high-banked quarter-mile for 75 laps to start the 2021 season.

It was a familiar face returning to victory lane with the Sportsman as Jeff Marcum dominated the race.  The multi-time Anderson Speedway track champion took the lead early in the race and was untouchable throughout several restarts and long runs.

It was Marcum’s eighth-career CRA Late Model Sportsman win overall, and his seventh at Anderson.

“When the race was over I said it can’t be, I want to go back for one more restart at least.  Gee whiz, how many could we have?  That was a lot of fun.  18 cars in this field, it’s a blast to race with all those guys, a real good class of drivers,” Marcum said on the Speed51.TV broadcast.  “Tommy Cook and Billy Hutson and those guys, and of course Ronnie (Rose), they always run so good and they bring so much speed.”

Fans in attendance at Anderson may have not noticed it while ending both practice sessions in the top two and qualifying sixth, but Marcum’s team struggled with the car throughout the afternoon leading to the race.

I’ve got to thank my guys.  When we unloaded we weren’t so good but they worked on it all the way up until race time and they found out what our gremlin was.  They really made this car fast.

While Marcum was running away with the win, the rest of the top-five shuffled with every restart.  Former CRA Street Stock champion James Kirby III emerged out of the battle with a series-best second-place finish.

“I was struggling on restarts with this new restrictor plate deal.  Once we got it figured out we were rolling pretty good.  We’ve got to make a few adjustments next time we come back and I think we’ll have a pretty good piece,” Kirby said.

“He had me covered there at the end.  I tried all I could on the outside but it was a little slippery up there.  We only had two or three laps so it is what it is, I’ll take second place.”

The CRA Street Stock also saw a dominating effort in their feature event.  Former series champion Jason Atkinson used a long run to the finish to build up a big lead and score his 10th career win with the series over Matt Barnes, who was making his debut with the series.

Atkinson is also no stranger to success at Anderson.  He now has 13 wins at the facility between CRA Street Stocks and Late Model Sportsman.

“We knew we had a pretty good car, we practiced on old tires all day yesterday and most of today and it just didn’t fall off.  I knew it was going to be good.  I’ve been around here a few laps.
