Jeff Choquette led the Pro Late Model points standings heading into the final night of the 51st annual World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing at New Smyrna Speedway (FL) and set fastest time in qualifying. The West Palm Beach driver started back in sixth due to an invert, but in the end it was Matt Wallace pulling out the win in a classic finish.
Wallace took the lead from inverted pole-sitter Todd Stone at the start of the race. Choquette assumed the lead after a restart on lap 17, holding it until the very last corner when Wallace muscled his way around Choquette on the last lap to take the final PLM race of the week.
The win is Wallace’s first at the World Series since 2015, when he won on the third night of the World Series and finished fourth in points.
“It was a very intense race,” Wallace told Speed51.com powered by JEGS. “Choquette had a great restart but we knew what we had so we let him have the lead for a handful of laps until we decided to make our move there at the end of the race in the final corner.”
After the race, Choquette went to Wallace’s window and explained what he had told him.
“I went up to his window and told him there’s a difference between rubbing and racing and rubbing and wrecking,” Choquette said. “I guess he wasn’t going to leave any room for error but I got free inside of him but he just ran me into the fence.”
Wallace felt he needed a win to cap off his week.
“We had to give it all we had, it’s the last night of Speedweeks.”
While Wallace won the battle it was Choquette; however, who won the war, taking the Pro Late Model Division World Series title.
