Ray Christian III ended his 2019 Granite State Pro Stock Series campaign on a high note, scoring a dominant win in the rain-shortened season finale at Claremont Motorsports Park (NH) on Sunday afternoon.
Christian had a fast car all afternoon en route to his second GSPSS victory of the 2019 season. He won his heat race and transferred to the top six qualifying re-draw, where he drew the pole. The Connecticut native grabbed the lead on the initial start, leading all 86 caution-free laps to take home the checkered flag.
“It was pretty good,” Christian said after the race. “I was trying to save something at the end just in case we got a late yellow. We saw the rain coming at the drop of the green, so we said we’re just going to go set a pace and hopefully it works out for us if it goes a hundred [laps], and if it doesn’t work out then it doesn’t work out. We weren’t going to take a chance.”
For Christian, the 2019 season was the solid run the team needed, and they are all looking forward to returning in 2020 and fighting for the title once again.
“Congrats to Joey, they kicked everybody’s butts all year and they deserve it,” Christian said. “I can’t wait to come back next year and hopefully run with Joey for a championship.”
Christian may have won the race, but Berwick, Maine’s Joey Doiron won the season-long war. Doiron came into the race with a massive lead in the championship standings, and locked down the title just by taking the green flag.
“It’s over,” Doiron said with a sigh of relief. “Everybody’s worked hard all year. It’s a cool deal, I wish I would have had a yellow there at the end, it would have been even more exciting. I think we should have just had a green-white-checkered.”
Doiron’s team knew they would take the title at the green flag, but that didn’t stop them from trying to go out and win the race as well.
“The plan is always to go to win,” he said. “I thought we had a good chance when we got to second, we just needed a yellow. Ray got out quite a bit and he had a good car, but I think if we would have had a short run or even just the chance to get alongside him, I think we would have had a good chance. But congrats to them, they definitely had a good car today.”
