WALKER, Mich.– Brandon Hermiller enters Saturday’s “The Chet” championship night at Berlin Raceway hoping to turn heads in the track’s final Super Late Model action for 2014. The driver of the H.S. Die/VISI-TST Ford has had an impressive year during his sophomore season behind the wheel of a “Super” and he’s determined to close out the schedule at his “home track” on a positive note.
“We’ve had a pretty decent season of racing at Berlin and we really want to finish it off on a positive note,” said Hermiller, who returned to his classes at Grand Rapids Community College this week in pursuit of his goal of getting a degree in manufacturing engineering technology. “We would love to be able to cap the year off with a win which is what we’re shooting for.
“I’m so proud of the job that Josh and our team has done this season, especially at home at Berlin,” Hermiller said of crew chief Josh Slade, the 25-year-old second generation racer whose late father (Brian Slade) was a noted engine-builder. “We’ve really shown a lot of progress this season and are definitely headed in the right direction.”
In the six regular season Super Late Model races at Berlin so far this season, Hermiller has posted two top-five finishes and five top-10s. The popular 21-year-old charger had a 6.5 average start and 7.8 average finish. He won a heat race and completed an incredible 100 percent (375 of 375) of possible laps. He led laps in Super Late Model racing for the first time.
“I’ve always said that the Super Late Model division at Berlin is as stout of competition as you’ll find anywhere in the country,” said Hermiller. “When you look at the statistics for the track this season, I think it really supports that line of thinking.
“When you’ve had a solid year like we have, with five top-10s in six races and completing every possible lap, you’d hope to be in a position to challenge for the track points title,” said Hermiller, a former Berlin Raceway Pro Stock Champion and Most Popular Driver. “As stiff as the competition has been this season, we are coming into the final race sixth in the standings and hoping to climb into the top five.”
Hermiller enters Saturday night’s action sixth in points with 659 and trailing fifth-place Tim DeVos by 27 points.
“As always, we’ll be as prepared as possible when we get there on Saturday afternoon,” said Hermiller. “When the dust settles, it’d be really cool to have our best night of the year and close out our 2014 Berlin season that way.”
Even though Hermiller and crew are finishing up their Berlin racing this weekend, they still have several outings on the road scheduled for the upcoming months. They are set to compete in ARCA/CRA Super Series events at Winchester Speedway and Lucas Oil Raceway in September and October.
Hermiller’s No. 6 H.S. Die/VISI-TST Ford Fusion also carries sponsorship from River Hills Lodge, West End Body Shop, T.A.A.G. Tooling and Accessories Group, Stehouwer Frozen Foods and Beaver Research Company during the 2014 season.
Saturday night’s “THE CHET” championship night, in memory of the late founder of the track, Chester Mysliwiec, features all seven Berlin Raceway divisions. The Super Late Models, Outlaw Late Models, Modifieds, Super Stocks, Sportsman Vintage Modifieds and Kalamazoo Vapor 4-cylinders will all be in action in extended features.
Special treats will be $1 beers and $1 hot dogs along with a great fireworks display. Adult admission is only $12, with students admitted for $8 and kids for $5. Military veterans and seniors 65 and over will be admitted free of charge.
