Austin, TX – The 2014 racing season for Casey Smith has been disappointing to say the least. Crashes and motor problems ended his campaign for the 2014 Southern Super Series (SSS) Championship, which concludes this weekend with the final Gulf coast Doubleheader weekend of the year. Before the accident totaled his red #99 and motor problems shortened the season, Smith had been running up front and even led the points early in the season. Now Smith is looking to spoil the championship party.

Even though Smith has not raced since the middle of July, he is still 10th in the season long point standings. However, Smith is not in contention for the championship, the top five in the SSS points all have a mathematical chance of winning the championship. Smith though, is not concerned with the outcome of the championship as much as he is getting a win and getting in a good tune up for the 2014 Snowball Derby in December.

“We don’t have anything to fight for in the points,” said Smith. “We really just want to get a win before the season ends. We’ve been fast throughout the year, but had motor problems that set us way behind earlier this summer. We’ve got a little bit of time to get things back in gear and get ourselves a win, and get our groove back at Pensacola before the Derby in December.”

After this weekend two major races remain on the schedule for Smith after this weekend’s Gulf Coast doubleheader, two races that everyone wants to win, the All American 400 and the Snowball Derby.

“Winning one or both of those races would quickly change our season,” said Smith. “But first we need to focus on this weekend. We have had a good car at both Pensacola and Mobile this season and we’d like to get a Southern Super Series win under our belts. We realize that there is a championship battle going on, but we’re here for the trophies this weekend.”

The doubleheader weekend kicks off on Friday night at Pensacola’s Five Flags Speedway with the Miller Lite 125, and the Super Southern Series season culminates on Saturday night at Mobile International Speedway with the Sunoco 125.
