Jeff Cannon is batting one thousand in JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour competition in 2016. Cannon had yet to run a single race with the series in 2016 according to TheThirdTurn.com, but he found himself in victory lane at the end of Sunday’s 100-lap race anyway.

Cannon’s victory didn’t come easy, though.  Cannon had to fend off series points leader Cody Coughlin on multiple late-race restarts to take the win.

S 51 TV Network redWith nine laps to go Coughlin got a terrific jump from the bottom lane and dove deep into turn one.  Coughlin slid up in front of Cannon, but Cannon quickly countered.  He cut left and drove to the inside of Coughlin to take the lead back off turn four.  From there Cannon drove away.

“I saw him coming, but we were better on the majority of the restarts,” Cannon told Speed51.com powered by JEGS after the race.  “He still got me on that last one, which of course was the one we really needed.  We just fought and fought.  I was either bringing home the steering wheel or the checkered flag.”

The victory was also Cannon’s first career JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour victory, something he’s been working towards for quite a few years.

“We’ve been knocking on the door at so many of these races,” he said.  “I’m so glad we finally put the whole package together today.”

While the feel-good story of the day was Cannon’s win, the story of the race was Coughlin’s charge.  Coughlin missed qualifying because he was racing the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series event in Loudon, New Hampshire.  That caused him to start at the rear of the 29-car field.

Coughlin gained nine spots in the first 10 laps, but the car still wasn’t handling to his liking in the early stages.  He brought the car down pit road during an early caution period so his team could make adjustments.

After the changes were made, Coughlin methodically worked his way through the field before eventually battling with Cannon for the win.

“At the start of the race the car wasn’t great,” Coughlin said over the PA.  “My guys made changes during the break and we were able to go forward from there.”
