Called Out: NY Racer Drives to SC After Watching Broadcast

One tweet Friday night led to a 12-hour drive for New York’s Mike Fowler.

The DIRTcar Sportsman Modified racer was at work, watching Speed51’s broadcast of the South of the Border Showdown at Lake View Motor Speedway (SC). It was a rare trip south for the modifieds based in the Northeast, but Fowler did not originally plan to follow his comrades south.

Seeing them racing on Friday night spurred Fowler to make a tweet, largely to stir up interest.

“Last night, I was at work,” Fowler told Speed51. “I was supposed to work nights all weekend. I was watching the stream and I was like, ‘You know what, let’s just screw with everybody and say I should load up my car,’ just to get a response from everybody. Just to see what would happen, create a little traffic for me. Maybe it can draw some interest partnership-wise, something like that.”

Instead, the tweet generated interest from Alan Dietz and Wesley Outland, the commentators for Speed51’s broadcast of the event, with both calling out Fowler to follow through on his tweet. Others also responded on social media, looking for Fowler to make the 12-hour drive south.

“The guys up in the booth decided they wanted to call me out four times,” Fowler said. “Then, I’m getting called out on social media, Facebook and Twitter and everything else.”

From there, it was a mad dash for Fowler to get off work, find a couple of last-minute crew members, and prepare his car.

“Made a couple phone calls, got a couple guys to go with me, left work at 11 o’clock last night. Thrashed on the car, because it wasn’t ready. Got her loaded up at about 2:30 in the morning. We were on the road at 3 a.m. and drove straight here.”

Fowler admitted that getting called out was the driving force behind his last-minute decision to compete in Saturday’s portion of the South of the Border Showdown.

“Being called out. I swear to God, that was it. What happens with me, and it’s happened a couple of times, is someone will say, ‘Oh, you won’t do that!’ Bad. Because I’m gonna do it. So, I do it.”

While it was a long drive and a lot of hard work, Fowler did not regret the trip to Lake View.

“I’m glad I came down. The track’s nice. I’ve been listening to the guys up in the booth. They’re doing a great job, not knowing who we are or anything like that, they’re covering us great. The broadcast was awesome, hats off to Speed51, hats off to Lake View Speedway. This track is phenomenal. I’m enjoying myself. I’m glad I made the trip, it’s just going to suck driving 12 hours back.”
