On Sunday, we got our first glimpse at the entry list for the 53rd Annual Snowball Derby at Five Flags Speedway. Currently, 47 drivers are entered for the crown jewel event to close out the 2020 season.
Here is our By the Numbers look at the preliminary Snowball Derby entry list, courtesy of resident Stat Boy Elgin Traylor.
2: Cole Butcher heads back to the Snowball Derby looking to start on the front row for the third-straight year. Butcher started on the outside of the front row in 2018 and 2019.
4: Bubba Pollard enters the Snowball Derby as a four-time Blizzard Series champion. As the Blizzard Series champion, Pollard has a guaranteed starting spot in this year’s race. The Georgia driver will be making his 13th start this year at the Derby.
4: Donnie Wilson Motorsports will be bringing four Super Late Models to the Snowball Derby. Wilson will be joined by Chandler Smith, Cole Butcher and Kaden Honeycutt.
9: California driver Derek Thorn heads back to Five Flags Speedway having completed 99.58% of the laps he has run in the Snowball Derby. Thorn won the Allen Turner Snowflake 100 last year and started on the pole for Sunday’s event before finishing 15th.
9.67: Preston Peltier heads to the Snowball Derby with an average starting spot of 9.67. He always starts strong, but in 2019 he recorded a career-best fifth-place finish.
11: Veteran driver turned car owner Donnie Wilson will be making his 11th start behind the wheel of a Super Late Model. Remember back in 2010, he was second to Johanna Long for the coveted Tom Dawson Trophy.
15: This will be Snowball Derby number 15 for Augie Grill if he qualifies into the show. For Grill, this will be the first without his dad Frankie Grill, who passed away just a few weeks ago. We know Augie will be racing with a heavy heart.
37: The starting field is slated to be 37 spots if Travis Braden needs a provisional. If Braden makes the show on time, the field is expected to be 36 starting spots.
47: For a first look at the entry list, the total number of entries of 47 is a solid number with a lot of star power. We know more entires are coming and this list will only get better.
51: Stephen Nasse will return to the Snowball Derby after collecting a pair of Blizzard Series wins this season. The 2020 Southern Super Series will be locked into the field and will look to win the Snowball Derby after last years disappointment.
53: This will be the 53rd running of the Snowball Derby. The first Snowball Derby was back in 1968.
300: The Snowball Derby is 300 laps and will serve as the last big Super Late Model show of 2020.
??: We know that some of the car numbers on the entry list raised some questions. Bubba Pollard is listed in the No. 71 and defending race winner Travis Baden is listed in the No. 26. However, Braden mentioned on Twitter Sunday night he would be piloting a different number.
