Kalamazoo Klash XXIV takes place this Wednesday night at Kalamazoo Speedway in Michigan. The best Outlaw Super Late Model racers will race for 125 green flag laps and will be joined by the Template Super Late Models from the ARCA/CRA Super Series.
Speed51.com’s resident “Stat Boy” Elgin Traylor takes a look at the race “by the numbers.” Check out the numbers below and if you can’t make it out to Kalamazoo Speedway on Wednesday, watch the race via a live pay-per-view broadcast on Speed51.com.
1 – Phil Bozell has finished every lap but one in the Klash since 2008. In those years he has recorded one win, a second and a third-place finish.
4 – Both Andy Bozzell and Terry Senneker Jr. have won the Outlaw portion of the Kalamazoo Klash a record four times. Chris Orr is the only other driver to win the race more than once.
5 – Terry Senneker Jr. enters the race week looking for a fifth win in the Kalamazoo Klash. He got taken out of last year’s race and finished 16th in what was a a run for four in a row.
11.759 – Terry Senneker Jr. won the pole two years back with a lap of 11.759. That’s fast, but not as fast as the world record set at the Call of the Wild. Last year, Mike Shewchuk went 9.924 to set the record.
12 – Brian Bergaker has logged six top-10 finishes in his last six starts in the Kalamazoo Klash. He was second a year ago after charging from the 15th starting spot. This was his second consecutive second-place finish. He’s been in the top 10 every year since his first race in 2004.
15 – Andy Bozell has posted 15 top-10 runs in the Kalamazoo Klash Outlaw race. He has three wins and a total of eight podium finishes.
23 – There have been 23 lead changes in five running of the Klash template Late Model race.
24 – This will be the 24th running of the Kalamazoo Klash. The event started back in 1993 with Andy Bozell taking down the win.
125 – Both races will be 125 laps this season. The Outlaw portion of the Klash has had distances up to 200 in the past.
197 – Andy Bozell led 197 of 200 laps in the 1997 Klash.
217: A long list of drivers have run the Kalamazoo Klash including notables like Kyle Busch, Matt Kenseth, Johnny Benson Jr., Bob Senneker, Scott Bloomquist, Ted Christopher, Mike Eddy, Gary Howe and Gary St. Amant.
The Double: Phil Bozell and Johny Benson are the only drivers to win both the Outlaw portion of the Kalamazoo Klash and the Klash template portion of the race. The template race started in 2011 and it was Johnny Benson taking the win to add to his Klash win in 2006.
Knocking on the Door: The Roahrig family with dad J.R. Roahrig and son Tyler Roahrig have been so close to victory in the Klash. J.R. was third in 2014 and fourth in 2011. Tyler was second in both 2012 and 2013, but missed 2014 due to an injury. He has some unfinished business at the Klash. One week ago, Tyler won the Summer Sizzler for the fourth time in the last five years.
Point Leader: Mark Shook leads the track Outlaw Late Model standings heading into Klash week.
The Roll of the Dice: The Klash Outlaw portion will be the roll of two dice plus eight. How’s that for putting fast cars in the back? We have seen winners come from 20th or deeper in the past.
