By the Numbers: 44th Annual Rattler 250 at South Alabama

Many of the nation’s top Super Late Model stars will converge in Kinston, Alabama this weekend for the 44th running of the prestigious Rattler 250 at South Alabama Speedway.  We get you ready for the first major Late Model race since the COVID-19 pandemic in this edition of “By the Numbers” on Speed51.

1: The Rattler 250 is race number one for the Southern Super Series in 2020.

4: Augie Grill is a four-time pole winner and a two-time race winner at the Rattler 250.

4: 2010 Rattler 250 winner Jeff Fultz has been strong the last few years with top 10 runs in his last four Rattler 250 starts. Fultz will look to add more to his successful list of achievements this weekend.

8: 2020 starts the eighth season of the Southern Super Series presented by Sunoco.  The series normally starts off the season at South Alabama and ends at Five Flags Speedway.

9: Despite not being on the entry list we wanted to point out that Casey Smith holds the record for having led nine different Rattler 250 events since 2005. the former track champion in the Super Late Model class never won the event, but he finished third in the Rattler three times and was second in 2015.

33: The race has started up to 33 cars in the past and this could be one of the largest fields in Rattler history if all drivers on the entry list show up.

97: Stephen Nasse has completed 97% of the laps he has run at South Alabama Speedway.  The former Baby Rattler 125 winner was second in the 2013 Rattler 250 and seems due for a possible victory in 2020.

250: This will be the 16th Rattler to be run at the 250-lap distance.  The event has grown widely in popularity since the change.  The first Rattler was run in 1974.

336: Ty Majeski has led 336 laps in his previous four Rattler 250 appearances.  Majeski led 242 laps when he first won the races in 2016.

539: Since 2005 Augie Grill has led the most laps in the Rattler 250 with 539.  The race was run at shorter distances in 2005 and prior so the lap count has not been high like it has in recent years.

1974: The first Rattler race was in 1974.

2009: You would think that starting on the pole would be the way to go, but the last time the Rattler 250 was won from the pole was in 2009 when Augie Grill pulled it off.

2499: Bubba Pollard enters this weekend’s race having led 2499 laps in the Southern Super Series.  One more lap pushes him over 2500 for the series.

Deep Field: Looking at the entry list, former winners Giovanni Bromante, Ty Majeski, Bubba Pollard, Jeff Fultz, and Augie Grill are entered in the race. Those five are seeking a shot at another picture with the rattlesnake in victory lane.

Talented Field: Between former winners and champions, this continues to be one of the deepest fields in Rattler 250 history.

Excited Field: This will be the first major event since SpeedFest for extra-distance Super Late Model events.
