By the Numbers: 2020 Short Track Draft

On Thursday, the 2020 Short Track Draft officially kicks off on Speed51 with the Short Track Draft Selection Show.  During the show, we will find out who has been selected in the first round of this year's Draft.

Before tonight's Selection Show, here is a look "By the Numbers" at the Short Track Draft over the past 17 years.

1: Being the number one draft pick on the Speed51 Short Track Draft has been an honor since day one.  Over the years, here are the 16 drivers who have been given that distinction.

Former Number One Picks

2009 Brian Ickler

2008 Matt Hawkins

2007 Ryan Lawler

2005 Charlie Bradberry

2004 Ryan Moore

9: If you watched a lot of Saturday Night Live you saw the skits where they joke about being in the seven timers club or some other number as a badge of honor.  A few Short Track drivers can claim that with the Short Track Draft.  Kyle Benjamin, Andy Seuss and Bobby Santos, III have all been selected in nine drafts in the past.  Maybe we could get the three of them together and run a special race.

10: Speed51 will unveil the top 10 picks on Thursday night in the first ever Short Track Draft Selection Show.  A one-hour Short Track Draft Reaction Show will follow, giving fans three hours of conversation regarding the draft.  Click here to watch live starting at 7:00 p.m. ET Thursday night.

12: In 2009, the 12th pick ended up being Trevor Bayne, who would go on to win the Daytona 500.  Winners can come from anywhere on the board.

12: Erik Jones was also 12th on the board in 2011, before he landed three top-five spots in the coming drafts.  Jones would go on to win the Snowball Derby twice and the Winchester 400 three times.

17: This is the 17th year for the Speed51 Short Track Draft.

2006: 2206 was the first year the draft expanded to 51 drivers.  In the past, it was split with an under 18 class and over 18 class.

The Draft: We will release a select number of draft picks each day, similar to the NFL draft.  Thursday night, the top 10 is our first round as we call it.

The Panel: Track owners, promoters, drivers, industry leaders, media members, NASCAR drivers, owners and short track enthusiasts have been a part of the panelist since day one.

The Result: Some drivers see this as a badge of honor, some don’t put much stock into it and others use it as a motivation tool for the year.  The simple fact is the Short Track Draft is a popular ranking system for up and coming Short Track drivers.
