The ULTIMATE Super Late Model Series announced that the series will be returning the Buck Simmons Memorial to their schedule. This race will be held at Lavonia Speedway (GA) on Friday, August 2nd. That will make for an exciting doubleheader weekend of racing for the ULTIMATE Supers, as they will head to Modoc Raceway (SC) on that Saturday, August 3rd.
“I am excited about going back to Lavonia,” said Kelley Carlton, series director. “They have a great fan base in the area and the track has a ton of history.”
During the course of this weekend, drivers will be battling to win $4,141 at Lavonia on Friday before a $4,000-to-win event at Modoc on Saturday.
“I believe it will be a great opportunity for our teams to race for some good purses without a lot of travel, which is always good for them,” said Carlton.
The ULTIMATE Supers race at Lavonia Speedway on August 2nd will be called the Buck Simmons memorial, to pay tribute to a short track racing legend.
“Buck is a first ballot National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame inductee and he was from right there, in that Northeast Georgia region,” said Carlton. “He had a lot of fans in Georgia and the Carolinas, so he is a true legend in that area. It is an honor to be a part of an event that pays tribute to him.
“Buck Simmons was an integral part of racing especially in this area,” said Scott Childress, Co-Promoter of Lavonia Speedway. “I remember watching Buck race as a child and pulling for him. It’s an honor for us to pay back the respect he has earned in the racing community.”
The partnership between Lavonia and the ULTIMATE Super Late Model Series is a culmination of a long-time friendship between Childress and Carlton.. Childress called Carlton and asked if they would be interested in being part of the event. Ever since then, they have been looking for the right date to put this event on the schedule.
Childress said this event took a lot of phone calls and planning, but they were able to put the race at Lavonia Speedway, on August 2nd.
“Fans need to see a Super race in this area this year,” said Childress. “All the events have rained out. It’s way overdue. Plus, the chance to honor Buck Simmons will be a treat for everyone.”
This new announcement has many people excited for several of reasons, as to pay tribute to Buck Simmons, to be able to run two races in the series on back-to-back nights with big purses and short traveling distances, and to bring Super Late Model racing back to Lavonia this year.
“I expect we will have a good crowd there,” said Carlton. “That crowd loves super late model racing and they are hungry to have some in the region.”
“Our goal is to put on the best show we can and provide the drivers with the best track that we can give them,” said Childress. “This will be the same game plan at a little higher level and expectation. Hopefully every week is a positive impact and is a building block as we go.”
This exciting doubleheader weekend for the ULTIMATE Super Late Model Series will kick off on August 2nd for the Buck Simmons Memorial at Lavonia Speedway and will continue on August 3rd at Modoc Raceway to finish off the weekend.
