The first-ever Midget feature at Millbridge Speedway lived up to the hype to kick off the DiaEdge Carolina Midget Showdown. The race featured six lead changes during the 30-lap feature, with lots of three-wide racing and slide jobs to go around.
Stewart-Haas Racing driver Chase Briscoe prevailed in a photo finish with Hendrick Motorsports driver Kyle Larson to take the win in a thriller. The two NASCAR Cup Series drivers battled for the lead for the last four laps with Briscoe catfishing on the bottom and Larson ripping the top. The Indiana native would beat out Larson by just .089 seconds.
“I knew he wasn’t going to pass me underneath, that’s for sure. I was going to make him go the hard way around. It felt like a heck of a race from my vantage point, I felt like we were on top of each other there forever,” Briscoe said on the Speed51.TV broadcast. “Those last couple laps I tried throwing it away and started missing the bottom and I could hear Kyle the entire time.
“The track was really good, I feel like this next race the top will be even more there just because the bottom will keep blowing more and more. My car got better as it went on, it was a little tight at the beginning. It was super fun, hopefully next year we can have an actual race with 40-50 cars here.”
Larson originally started on the outside front row for the first feature, but he was caught up in a turn one incident with Cannon McIntosh and others and had a small flip. He restarted at the tail and worked his way through the field before missing out on his 46th win of 2020 by mere inches.
“The bottom and top are so equal it was hard to get runs. I could hit it good one time and I’d get to the exit and bounce and make a mistake. That was a lot of fun,” said Larson. “I made a mistake coming to the white off of four and that’s what probably really cost me the win, but I was able to make decent time on the back. I made a mistake going into three and rode the wall but it was smoother with both tires on the fence. It was an awesome race there.”
NASCAR Cup Series champion Chase Elliott’s first Midget feature resulted in a third place. CJ Leary and Ryan Timms rounded out the top-five.
