For the past two seasons, veteran driver Brian Campbell has won the first two of three races in the ARCA/CRA Super Series Powered by JEGS.
Each year his first win came at the season opener at Toledo Speedway in Toledo, Ohio and his second came at Berlin Raceway in Marne, Michigan, Campbell’s home track, as he did again on Saturday night by winning the Berlin 125.
“It’s like I grew up racing here or something,” Campbell joked. “It is always fun to be able to come here and race now. I grew up racing all of the local divisions here and it just means a lot to be able to come back here again and be able to bring home another win.”
Berlin is known to be a tricky racetrack and takes numerous laps around the 7/16-mile oval to be able to figure out exactly how to get around the place and that is something that hometown driver Campbell has surely figured out.
Campbell set the fast time of the night and after drawing for the inversion he would start fifth in the field. It didn’t take long for Campbell to get to the front of the track. He brought another hometown veteran, Terry Senneker Jr. to the front with him. The two drivers battled for several laps until Senneker got the lead over Campbell.
64 laps into the event, Senneker had motor issues and dropped oil on the track forcing him to call it a night and to hand the lead back to Brian Campbell who never looked back.
“I was on the high side of Terry (Senneker) trying to go back to the lead when he started leaking oil and I didn’t ever get any on my tires, just the right place at the right time tonight,” Campbell said. “I love racing with the CRA Super Series, it is great and I plan to do it as long as I can.”
Brian Campbell has won 16 CRA Super Series feature events with seven of those coming from Berlin Speedway. Campbell proves to have a fast car wherever he goes, as he is fifth on the CRA Super Series all time wins list.
Joe Bush is another local driver who a known name at the Berlin Raceway, he and his daughter Lauren Bush both had strong runs, Joe came home in the runner up position and his daughter brought home a fourth place finish.
“It’s always fun to run with this series when they come to town,” Joe Bush said after the race. “We had a good racecar tonight, but I don’t think I had anything for Brian (Campbell) tonight he just had a really good car.”
Chris Anthony started 19th and came up to finish third.
Cody Coughlin started deep in the pack and had a racecar that just seemed to get better as the race went on. Starting 23rd in the pack, Coughlin drove up to the fifth position and brought home a solid top five run.
The ARCA/CRA Super Series powered by JEGS will be in action on Monday, May 25th at Illiana Motor Speedway in Schererville, Indiana for the Chicagoland Showdown with the ARCA Midwest Tour at 2:30pm.
