Justin Bonsignore’s last eight top-five finishes on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour didn’t include a win.
That streak was snapped Wednesday at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park (CT).
Bonsignore, of Holtsville, N.Y., fended off Doug Coby on a pair of late-race restarts to capture the Budweiser King of Beers 150.
It was Bonsignore’s first NWMT victory since Aug. 29, 2015 at Riverhead Raceway.
“It’s been almost a year since I won, and that was really starting to eat at me,” Bonsignore said.
“Hadn’t won anything, man. It was tough. But we’re back (Wednesday), and we showed that we can run with these guys.”
Bonsignore overtook Coby on lap 74 and kept the four-time series champion in his rear-view mirror after restarts on laps 134 and 148.
“Nailed both restarts,” Bonsignore said. “Was able to get good runs. Doug had a good run on that second one…threw a little bit of a block.
“But you gotta do what you gotta do to win these races.”
Bonsignore pitted for three tires during the first of three caution periods on lap 54, and he restarted third behind Chase Dowling and Eric Goodale.
“The guys nailed the pit stop,” Bonsignore said. “Actually got us off first of the guys that took three. Had a nice, easy time getting back through the cars that didn’t pit.”
Coby set a blistering pace early on, leading the first 57 circuits. He also led laps 62 to 73.
Coby restarted fourth on a lap-148 restart before settling for a runner-up finish.
“I would’ve loved to been the leader,” Coby said. “I spun the tires on the bottom; Bobby (Santos) spun the tires on the bottom. It’s just how it goes.
“It just sucks from the guy who’s second in points wins and gets a couple bonus points because we’re getting to that time of the year where it’s going to start to matter.”
With the win, Bonsignore cut his deficit in the driver standings from 20 to unofficially 15 points heading to Bristol Motor Speedway (TN).
Santos joined Bonsignore and Coby on the podium, while Woody Pitkat and Ryan Preece, who charged from the rear after making an unapproved adjustment after qualifying, completed the unofficial top five.
