Big Dirt Late Model Event Coming to Spectator-less Cherokee Saturday

Dirt Late Model racing will return to Cherokee Speedway this Saturday in a major way.  Some of the biggest names in the sport will compete in the Palmetto Invitational at “The Place Your Momma Warned You About” in Gaffney, South Carolina.

The event is a joint venture with Cherokee Speedway, DC II LLC Concrete Construction Company and Speed51. 50 drivers have been invited to the race, which will be contested in front of spectator-less grandstands.  The 60-lap feature event will pay $10,000 to win.

While invitations were sent privately, drivers who have accepted invitations and confirmed their participation in the Palmetto Invitational include three-time and defending Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series champion Jonathan Davenport, former World of Outlaws Late Models champion Darrell Lanigan and 2017 March Madness winner at Cherokee Ross Bailes.

“The support we’ve received has been absolutely phenomenal,” said Cherokee Speedway promoter Scott Childress.  “The racing family is a big family, and they’ve been incredibly supportive in all of this.  We also want to be able to offer an opportunity to allow Dirt Late Model racers to get back to work during this difficult time for all while also maintaining the social distancing guidelines set forth.”

While spectators will not be allowed in the stands due to social distancing practices and regulations, Speed51 will offer a live pay-per-view broadcast of the event.  Details regarding the broadcast will be made available Tuesday.

A full list of entries will be announced soon.

Along with the five-digit payday for the main event, there will also be $1,000 up for grabs in the Last Chance Race preceding the feature.

The event will also benefit The One SC Fund.  The One SC Fund is currently activated to fund statewide COVID-19 response efforts in a partnership between SC Grantmakers Network, Together SC, and the United Way Association of SC.

“We always try to give to organizations when we have events and raise money for them,” said Childress.  “This fits with what we have going on and what we can do to help.  We are fortunate to have a platform where we are able.”

DC II LLC is a concrete contractor service based in Clover, South Carolina, less than an hour from Cherokee Speedway.  DC II LLC Concrete Construction Company provides a range of concrete services from construction to finishing, including decorative construction and foundation work.
