Christopher Bell has been enjoying his holidays a little differently than most. Some have spent time with the family, others have gone to the tropics. Bell, ever the racer, has been racing Sprint Cars and Midgets in New Zealand and on Sunday night he finally picked up a Sprint Car win at Western Springs Speedway with a last-lap pass on Michael Pickens.

Bell made a daring last-lap “pass in the grass” to take the win on Michael Pickens at the flat dirt track in Auckland, New Zealand. Western Springs Speedway’s racing surface is narrow, and that caused Pickens to get trapped behind lapped traffic. With Pickens marred behind slower vehicles, Bell was able to close in and make his move. He went into turn three and dropped his left-side tires in the grass after slight contact from Pickens, but he was able to hold on and make the move stick off turn four.

Track officials did review the pass to make sure it was a legal overtaking maneuver, but eventually it was deemed acceptable and Bell was named the winner of the 25-lap Sprint Car feature.

Bell’s trip so far has been a bit of a rollercoaster. He’s been fast in both Sprint Car and Midget classes, but he hadn’t been able to break into victory lane until Sunday’s race. Bell did also finish second to Kyle Larson in Sunday’s Midget feature.
