Ross Bailes enjoyed another strong weekend, sweeping a pair of ULTIMATE Super Late Model Series features at Lancaster Motor Speedway and Carolina Speedway on Friday and Saturday. He discussed the big weekend while on Speed51’s “The Bullring” Monday morning.
The pair of wins were part of a busy week for Bailes, as he competed in the Last Call for the World of Outlaws Late Models at The Dirt Track at Charlotte before embarking on the ULTIMATE doubleheader.
“We went to Charlotte twice, then Lancaster and Carolina,” Bailes said. “As long as you don’t tear anything up, it’s not that big of a turnaround. You just have to clean the car up, make sure the tires are grooved and make a few adjustments on the car.”
Bailes enjoyed competing at venues close to his Clover, South Carolina home this week. Both ULTIMATE wins came at tracks where he cut his teeth early in his career.
Surprisingly, Bailes had not competed at Carolina Speedway since 2018, but he had no problem returning to victory lane at the Gastonia, North Carolina facility.
“Both of those tracks are tracks I grew up on. It was good coming back home. I hadn’t raced Carolina in about two years, but we usually do well there. The big thing is qualifying well, which we did, and then being easy on the tires to make sure we could go all 40 laps.”
The pair of wins add to his collection for 2020, which has included victories with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series, Carolina Clash Super Late Model Series and Xtreme DIRTcar Series. Still, Bailes believes he could have won even more races this year.
“We’ve been fast all year. I feel like we could have easily won five or six more races with a little luck on our side.”
While Bailes has proven he can beat the best of the best, competing at Lancaster and Carolina offered the challenge of racing against drivers who compete regularly at those tracks.
“When you run different tracks, it makes you better as a whole as a driver. When we go to Carolina, you have to beat guys who race there every week. It’s still tough coming home and facing the local guys.”
Highlights from both Lancaster and Carolina Speedway are available on Speed51.TV, “ The Official Video Home of ULTIMATE.”
