The Carolina Clash Super Late Model Series rolled south to Laurens County Speedway in South Carolina on Tuesday night for the 37th Annual Shrine Race. Ross “The Boss” Bailes showed everyone in attendance who was the boss with a dominating performance at the “Darlington of Dirt.”
Bailes set fast time in qualifying and quickly used that front-row starting spot to jump out into the lead.
Bailes had to deal with just one restart on the fifth lap of the 35-lap feature, but otherwise he went mostly uncontested as he led every single lap en route to the victory.
“You’ve got to qualify up front here to get that jump here,” Bailes said after the race. “This is great. I think this is my third or fourth Shrine Race win here. This track has always been good to me and I always enjoy coming here.”
Joey Coulter started the race on the outside of the front row. For much of the race, Coulter was the only driver that ventured off the bottom of the track.
Coulter was passed by Dennis “Rambo” Franklin, and finished third. He told Speed51.com after the race that he was frustrated with himself for not making the proper adjustments before the race.
“I knew the top was going to be hard to run consistent,” Coulter explained. “I under adjusted our car and didn’t read the race track very well. I had to go up there because I could get the car to handle better up there. It’s not a bad night, but I hate missing adjustments like that. I felt like after qualifying we had a really good car. I felt like I had a good read on the race track. I’m just a little puzzled why I didn’t catch where it was going.”
With a few laps remaining, Bailes caught heavy lapped traffic and it appeared as if Franklin might have a chance to fight for the win. Franklin said that he had no chance due to brake issues.
“We were done when we got to second,” Franklin said. “It cut the brake caliper in half. We had no brakes. That’s why it took us so long to get by those lapped cars. We’re still learning this race car. It’s getting better every week.”
Finishing out the top five was Brett Hamm and Dustin Mitchell.
Franklin was awarded the Speed51.com Hard Charger of the Race Award.
